obituary L. Thomas McLean Jr. (’ 94 BSBA,
’97 JD), 45, of Charlotte; June 21, 2017. McLean
was a corporate lawyer at Kennedy Covington
Lobdell & Hickman. Previously, he worked at
Troutman Sanders. At UNC, he was elected to Phi
Beta Kappa and was editor of Law Review.
1995 updates George Edward Battle
III (’ 95 BA, ’99 JD) of Charlotte has been elected
chair of the N.C. Council of School Attorneys. Battle,
general counsel for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Board of Education since 2010, was a member of
the GAA Board of Directors (1994–95) as student
body president. ◆ Jacqueline Denise Grant (’ 95
JD) of Asheville has been elected president-elect
of the N.C. Bar Association. Grant is a partner at
Roberts & Stevens. ◆ Dr. Suzanne Lazorick (’ 95
MD, ’ 95 MPH) of Newport has been appointed to
the N.C. Environmental Management Commission.
Lazorick is an assistant professor of pediatrics and
public health at the East Carolina University Brody
School of Medicine, focusing on childhood obesity
research, and also is the associate director for
community research and promotion. ◆ La Tonya
Denise Mitchell (’ 95 ABEd) of Fayetteville has been
admitted to the N.C. Principal Fellows Program,
which provides a merit-based scholarship loan for
a year of full-time academic study and a yearlong
internship in administration in an N.C. public
school. Mitchell has enrolled in the MSA program
at Fayetteville State University. ◆ Shannon Stover
Zink (’ 95 BA) of Metairie, La., has been selected as
planning and development council director on the
2017–18 board of directors for the Junior League of
New Orleans. Zink will advise the board on planning
and funding resources, including single-event
fundraisers and the Bloomin’ Deals Thrift Shop. Zink
is a real estate broker with Keller Williams.
obituary Marianne Jean Bumgarner-Davis (’ 95
PhD), 71, of Norwood; Feb. 25, 2017. Bumgarner-Davis taught at J.C. Smith University in Charlotte.
Previously, she worked in the Stanly County schools
and at various universities.
1996 updates Rocky Mamerto
Cabagnot (’ 96 BA) of Salisbury has been named
executive director of the Salisbury-Rowan Community
Action Agency, a nonprofit providing services to low-income working families and children. Cabagnot has
been an assistant professor of law at the Charlotte
School of Law for the past five years and developed
the school’s community economic development
program and legal clinic. ◆ Mark Mckelvie Lee (’ 96
BA) of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., has been named partner in
the white-collar defense and investigations practice of
Blank Rome. Lee is a former assistant U.S. attorney
for the U.S. District Court, District of Delaware, and
joins Black Rome from Schnader Harrison Segal
& Lewis, where he chaired the firm’s white-collar
defense and corporate investigations practice group.
◆ Kenton L. Sparks (’ 96 PhD) of Berwyn, Pa., has
been named provost and vice president of academic
affairs at Eastern University. Sparks is a professor
of biblical studies and past chair of the Christian
studies department at the university.
