Carolina’s Lightning Rod
This is how Silent Sam looked as students walked to their first classes of the new semester on Aug. 22 —
encircled with barricades for an anticipated protest that night. Soon after, an estimated 800 people attended a
loud but peaceful rally. Then the steel was taken down, replaced by students and others working shifts in a vigil
of insistence that the statue, dedicated in 1913 as the Confederate Monument, be removed. As other symbols of
the Confederacy came down across the country, the issue at UNC remained bound by a state law that prohibits
removal of historical monuments. Story, page 14.
