named a network development specialist working
with Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir, part of

’ 92 PhD) of Virginia Beach, Va., has completed the
Harvard Graduate School of Education’s first offering
of its certificate in advanced educational leadership,
an online program to discuss issues related to
innovation and best practices in education. Matney
is a program evaluation specialist with the Virginia
Beach city schools. ◆ Ripley Eagles Rand (’ 90 BA,
’ 95 JD) of Raleigh has been named a partner with
Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice. Rand served as
the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of North
Carolina and, earlier, as an N.C. Superior Court
judge. ◆ Tracy Wilson Smith (’ 90 ABEd) of Boone
has received the 2017 Award for Excellence in
Teaching from the UNC System Board of Governors.
Smith, a professor in the Reich College of Education
and assistant chair of the department of curriculum
and instruction at Appalachian State University,
was recognized for her use of a variety of teaching
approaches, including literature circles, Paideia
seminars and World Cafe conversations, and for
her emphasis on the importance of understanding
young adolescent culture.

51, of Charlotte; May 4, 2017. Lowe worked in
advertising, most recently as an account executive
with Tangerine Promotions. Previously, he worked
