Weller McCarthy (’ 84 BA, ’ 87 JD) of Boulder, Colo.,
Scott Thomas Self (’ 84 BA) of Burlington, and David
Brian Spencer (’ 84 BSIR) of High Point have been
appointed to the UNC Board of Visitors. McCarthy is
senior vice president for mergers and acquisitions
at Level 3 Communications. Self is the CEO of
Atlantic Intermediaries, a property and casualty
reinsurance brokerage firm. Spencer is executive
vice president and CFO at Bank of North Carolina.
◆ Chuck Wallington (’ 84 ABJO) of Greensboro
has earned a master’s degree in communications
management from the S.I. Newhouse School of
Public Communications at Syracuse University.
Wallington is a senior vice president of marketing
and communications at Cone Health. ◆ Diane
Grigull Weiner (’ 84 BMUS) of Coral Springs, Fla.,
has published a new schoolhouse mystery, Murder
Is Chartered, featuring a retired schoolteacher who
volunteers to help a friend with her fourth-grade
class and finds herself involved in the discovery
of the body of the school’s assistant principal.
Weiner’s 2016 mystery, A Deadly Course, was
named a finalist in the general fiction category of the
2017 Eric Hoffer Awards.
obituary Frances Jennings Parker (’ 84 BA, ’ 85
MS), 55, of Cordova, Tenn.; May 25, 2017. Parker
worked as a speech-language pathologist, serving
children and adults with special needs.
1985 updates Fred Alan Cunningham
(’ 85, ’ 88 JD) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.,
presented a talk, “Significant Changes in Bad Faith
Law,” at the 2017 Association of Plaintiff Interstate
Trucking Lawyers of America’s National Interstate
Trucking Super Summit. Cunningham is a civil trial
lawyer and shareholder in Domnick Cunningham &
Whalen. ◆ Sallie Harris Glover (’ 85 BA) of Raleigh
has been named vice chair of the UNC Board of
Visitors. Glover is the CEO of Harrispark Properties.
obituaries Marilyn Ellerbe Broderick (’ 85 BA),
55, of Taft, Tenn.; May 29, 2017. Broderick was a
linguist and teacher at several high schools. She also
was an adjunct professor at Motlow State Community
College. ◆ Susan Beatrice Jarrell (’ 85, ’ 90 BA),
53, of Mount Airy; April 18, 2017. At UNC, Jarrell
belonged to Kappa Alpha Theta. ◆ Jacqueline Elaine
Overton (’ 85 BA; ’ 89, ’ 88 MEd), 60, of Carrboro;
April 29, 2017. Overton spent her career at UNC’s
Department of Public Safety, working her way from
parking appeals officer to professional development
manager. She was honored for her work collaborating
with upper administrators and restructuring the
housekeeping department. She served on the
Carolina Black Caucus, the Employee Forum and
the board of the Association for Women Faculty and
Professionals. Among her numerous recognitions,

The center stairwell is now gone from the
library named for the first person to hold the
title of chancellor, Robert House (class of
1916), but always called the Undergrad. Gone
