Court judge for Judicial District 17B, Stokes and
Surry counties. Southern has served as a judge for
17B since 2008.
2003 update Benjamin Stuart Perry
(’03 BA) of Durham has been appointed to the UNC
Board of Visitors. Perry is a partner and finance
director with East West Partners.
obituary Dr. Spencer Brian Howard (’03 DDS),
43, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; April 28, 2017. Howard,
an adjunct faculty member at UNC’s School of
Dentistry, practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery
at Smile Design Manhattan and North East Implant
and Oral Surgery in New York. Previously, he worked
in private practice in Durham and was a subspecialty physician at Wake Medical Center.

2004 update Dana Ayscue Brown
(’02; ’04 PD) of Wellington, Fla., has been promoted
to associate dean for academics at the Lloyd
Gregory School of Pharmacy at Palm Beach Atlantic
University, where she is an associate professor of
pharmacy practice. Brown coordinates and teaches
pharmacy calculations and is an instructor in the

BA) of St. Petersburg, Fla., has received the Al
Neuharth Award for Investigative Reporting, along
with co-reporter Doug Donovan, for their report
Shocking Force, published in The Baltimore Sun.
The story revealed that police mostly used Tasers
against suspects who pose no threat. Puente, now
at the Tampa Bay Times, was on the Sun team that
was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for breaking
news coverage of the Freddie Gray saga and the
city’s riots. ◆ Briana Lynn Snyder (’05 BA) of
Towson, Md., has received her doctorate in nursing
from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Snyder
is an assistant professor of nursing at Towson
University with a focus on psychiatric and mental
health nursing, dissociative disorders and intimate
partner violence, and nursing education.

2006 update Caitlin Craig Doyle
(’06 BA) of Cincinnati has received the Frost Farm
Prize for metrical poetry for her poem Wish. Doyle
received $1,000, publication in The Evansville
Review and the opportunity to be a featured reader
at the Hyla Brook Reading Series at the Frost Farm
in June. Doyle is an Elliston Fellow in Poetry at the
University of Cincinnati and assistant editor of The
