football team will have its choice of the
practice building — rising 90 feet high,
taller than the nearby law school — and
100-yard artificial and natural grass outdoor
fields on the space known as Navy Field.
Miami will be the only member of the
ACC left without a 120-yard indoor
practice facility. The Eddie Smith Field
House, which has a 70-yard football field
and a 120-yard track, will stay.
Ehringhaus Field has been home to
intramurals and pickup games since the
South Campus dorms were built in the
1960s. A 900-seat grandstand will be
constructed on the north side, backing up
to Avery dorm and bordered on the east by
Athletics officials say the new fields will
be available for campus recreation when
not in use by the varsity teams, meaning
the current eight acres of recreation fields
will be practically doubled. That includes
two soccer practice fields to be built
alongside the track.
When everything is finished— expected
by the fall 2018 seasons — Carolina will
have about nine acres of artificial turf
