1984 updates Rick Jay Short (’ 84
PhD) of Kemah, Texas, and his wife, Paula Myrick
Short (’ 70 MEd, ’ 83 PhD), have both received
Alumni Achievement Awards from the UNC School of
Education. Rick Short is the dean of the College of
Human Sciences and Humanities at the University
of Houston-Clear Lake, where he has developed
partnerships with NASA, Shell Oil and Microsoft
to provide opportunities for students to conduct
research. ◆ Robert Watson Winston III (’ 84 BA)
of Raleigh has received a William Richardson Davie
Award from UNC. Winston is the CEO and owner of
Winston Hospitality, the founder of Winston Hotels
and a director of the Research Triangle Foundation
and Higher Education Works. ◆ Dana Bales Wooten
(’ 84 BSPH) of Smithfield has been named director
of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce. Wooten has
lived in Johnston County since she was 11 years
old. She has been executive director of the Johnston
County Association of Realtors for 13 years.
obituaries Elena Patterson Emerick (’ 84
BSCH), 54, of Carrboro; Nov. 23, 2016. Patterson
made her career in the research and medical
fields. Most recently she worked for Premier Home
Healthcare. She volunteered with the Humane
Society and the PTA. At UNC, she joined Alpha Chi
Sigma. ◆ Steven Bennett Wing (’ 84, ’ 83 PhD), 64,
of Pittsboro; Nov. 9, 2016. Wing was an associate
professor of epidemiology at UNC’s Gillings School
of Global Public Health. He gained recognition for
his work on occupational health and environmental
justice, such as his research on the incidence of
cancer downwind of a nuclear reactor in Three Mile
Island after a 1979 accident released radiation into
the atmosphere. Wing played keyboard with bands
in the Triangle.
1985 updates Nathan Bingham
Carnes (’ 85 BA) of Washington, D.C., has been
honored as the Washington, D.C., Realtor of the
Year by the National Association of Realtors.
Carnes is vice president and managing broker
of the W.C. & A.N. Miller Realtors’ Chevy Chase
office. ◆ C. Jeffrey Jones (’ 85 ABEd) of Shelby has
been inducted into the Cleveland County Sports
Hall of Fame. Jones was honored for his 23 years
of service with the Shelby Lions football team, as
well as his 20 years of coaching golf at Shelby High
School. Jones is an adjunct instructor at Cleveland
