This issue of the Review invites you to go on a summer departure, to consider memories of Chapel Hill, to read about alumni whose
professions and passions all involve food.
For many, college was not only a new world of
inquiry but one of gastronomical discovery. Some of
you got yourself a “freshman 15”; others, once away
from Carolina, have been inspired to shape hobbies,
careers and lives around one thing we all do — eat.
As we considered what to fold into the Review’s
first food issue, alumni emerged as a main ingredient
— people on adventures associated with growing,
raising, preparing and sharing. In the stories you’ll
find here, one abandoned a perfectly good office for a
pigsty. Another chased lofty degrees while scribbling
delicious daydreams on napkins. One married eats
and art with a hoe and spade. A life hovering over
hot dogs? Wouldn’t have it any other way. Truffles?
Really? Keep your fingers crossed. And let’s dig in.
