Race and Beauty in the Twentieth-Century South.
Roberts explores the pursuit of beauty in the
racial divides of the region, examining a range
of beauty products, practices and rituals from
the Great Depression to the 1950s and ’60s.
Roberts is an associate professor of history at
California State University-Fresno.

Pouliot Bridges (’01 BSN) of Cary has published
an article, “Creating an Innovative Educational
Structure to Support Best Practice Among Novice
Nurses,” in the February issue of The Journal of
Continuing Education in Nursing and an article,
“Measuring the Influence of a Mutual Support
Educational Intervention Within a Nursing Team,”
in the online edition of The International Journal
of Nursing Sciences on March 20, 2014. Bridges
is a clinical nurse manager at Rex Healthcare.
◆ Kelly Lee Hogan (’01 PhD) of Chapel Hill has
received a 2014 Robert E. Bryan Public Service
Award from UNC. Hogan is a senior lecturer in
the biology department, where she teaches a
service-learning course geared to increase blood
platelet donation awareness. Hogan’s students
work with the UNC Blood Donation Center on
marketing and outreach to student groups and
the local community. ◆ Sean Michael McGovern
(’01 BSPH, ’06 JD) of Pittsburgh has been named
a shareholder in Babst Calland. McGovern is
a member of the law firm’s energy and natural
resources and environmental services groups,
handling matters of waste disposal, erosion control, storage tank issues and site remediation.
