Dec. 14, 2013. During Boyd’s career as a professor of business administration, he taught at the
University of Denver, Florida Atlantic University
and Christopher Newport University, from which
he retired in 1996. At UNC, he was a cabinet
officer with Campus Y. ◆ Michael Dillard Brown
(’ 54 BSBA), 81, of Charlotte; March 14, 2014.
Brown retired as senior vice president of marketing with Lowe’s Home Centers, where he worked
from 1957 to 1982. He served on the board
of Piedmont Federal Savings Bank and chaired
the board of Grandfather Home for Children. He
served in the Air Force. At UNC, he belonged
to Chi Phi, AFROTC and student government. ◆
V. Dayton Estes Jr. (’ 54 AB, ’ 64 MA, ’ 68 PhD),
81, of Richfield; March 30, 2014. Estes retired
as a professor of German at Pfeiffer University.
At UNC, he belonged to the Dialectic Society.
◆ Edwin Octavius “Jack” Gooch (’ 54 PhD), 92,
of Troy, Va.; Feb. 18, 2014. A retired geologist,
Gooch served the community on the Fluvanna
County board of supervisors and the Fluvanna
County school board. He served in the Army Air
Forces in W WII. ◆ Janet Harris Hathaway (’ 54
ABJO), 81, of Raleigh; March 23, 2014. A flight
attendant with Capital United Airlines early in
her career, Hathaway also worked in publicity
for the airline. At UNC, she belonged to Delta
Delta Delta. ◆ Dr. Robert Spurgeon Jones Sr.
(’ 54 MD), 88, of Shelby; Feb. 18, 2014. Jones
practiced family medicine in Cleveland County
from 1958 to 2010. He graduated in the first
four-year class at the UNC School of Medicine. ◆
H. Trevilian Lyon (’ 54, ’ 59 AB), 81, of Carefree,
Ariz.; March 28, 2014. Lyon retired from KPNX-TV in Phoenix after a career in TV advertising
and sales. He served in the Army in the Korean
War. ◆ Sam Sylvanus McNinch III (’ 54), 81,
of Charlotte; Dec. 21, 2013. McNinch owned
and was president of McNinch Construction
and McNinch & Smith insurance brokerage. He
served in the Army. At UNC, he belonged to Beta
Theta Pi. ◆ Robert Kenneth Morris (’ 54 BSBA),
82, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; Feb. 8, 2014. In his
40-year career with IBM, Morris was IBM’s first
service center manager, in Raleigh. Previously,
he was a branch manager and senior corporate
executive for the IBM Data Processing Division
in Columbia, S.C., Richmond, Va., and Tallahassee, Fla. In retirement, he formed an information
technology consulting firm and an investment
firm. He served in the Army. At UNC, he belonged
to Lambda Chi Alpha. ◆ Lewis Hillsman Parham
Jr. (’ 54 BSBA, ’ 57 JD), 81, of Charlotte; Feb. 25,
2014. In his career in law, Parham practiced in
Charlotte and established his own law firm. He
was one of the four founders of New Dominion
Bank, where he was chairman. He served in
the Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps. At
UNC, he belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha and the
wrestling team. ◆ Margaret Mebane Parker (’ 54
AB, ’ 60 MSW), 81, of Salisbury; March 1, 2014.
Parker retired in 1990 as a social worker with the
Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salisbury. She began her career as a caseworker with
