was a research psychologist on the faculties of
UNC-Greensboro and Princeton and Emory universities. He also was a visiting professor and lecturer at
several universities, including UNC, Columbia, Rutgers,
Duke and New York University. In 1967, he became
director of the Center for Educational Research and
Evaluation at the Research Triangle Institute, retiring
in 1986. During WWII, he served in the Navy. At UNC,
he belonged to Glee Club and NROTC. ◆ Marion
Luceine Gaines-Saulsbury (’ 45 BSCOM), 86, of
Austell, Ga.; Jan. 8, 2012. Gaines-Saulsbury was one
of the first women in North Carolina to receive the
CPA designation in 1946. She worked in accounting
firms and was a founding partner of Fitzgerald & Co.
in Columbia, S.C. She also taught accounting at
Winthrop College and Lander College until she retired
in 1987. At UNC, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
◆ Ralph Hayes Hemphill Jr. (’ 45), 88, of San Diego;
Sept. 28, 2011. Hemphill was a former Crown Central Petroleum Corp. executive and a merchandising-public relations executive in Baltimore for the Maryland Department of Agriculture. During WWII, he was
a fighter pilot in the Navy. ◆ J. Taylor Hogan (’ 45),
87, of Richmond, Va.; Dec. 13, 2011. Hogan owned
J. T. Hogan Interior Design and Gifts for more than
60 years. At UNC, he belonged to Alpha Tau Omega.
◆ Ann Darrah Ray (’ 45 AB), 86, of Atlanta; Dec. 13,
2011. Ray was active in many civic organizations.
She studied French and traveled to Paris more than
30 times. ◆ Ashley Alvin Walker (’ 45), 91, of Asheboro; Jan. 10, 2012. Walker established the Food
Line Super Market chain in Randolph County and
was director of the Save-Rite grocery chain. He
served on the Randolph County school board and
was a former chair of the Randolph Democratic Party.
He served in the Navy during WWII. After the war he
managed the Carolina Inn.

Charlotte; Dec. 9, 2011. Harrill was a professor
emeritus of political science, dean of students and
chair of the political science department at Furman
University before he retired in 1983. He served on
the S.C. Mental Health Commission. During WWII,
he served in the Army Air Forces. At UNC, he was
elected to Phi Beta Kappa. ◆ Elmer Paul “Al”
Knopf (’ 47 BSCOM), 86, of Sedona, Ariz.; Sept. 25,
2011. Knopf was a senior production engineer with
General Motors before retiring in the early 1990s.
He served in the Navy during WWII. ◆ Morton
Rubin (’ 47 MA, ’ 50 PhD), 88, of Brookline, Mass.;
July 28, 2011. Rubin retired as professor emeritus
of sociology at Northeastern University. In the early
1950s, he did social work and research in Israel
for the Ministry of Social Welfare. His book
Plantation County, a study of a community in the southeast U.S., was published by UNC Press. ◆ Barbara
Lynn Simons (’ 47 AB), 85, of Charlotte; Jan. 28,
2012. Simons was an antiques dealer and a member of the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Her home
was featured on the Mint Museum Tour of Homes.
She was crowned Miss Dixie in 1946 at a beauty
pageant in Daytona Beach, Fla. At UNC, she

Raleigh; Jan. 13, 2012. Futrell was a physics labo-
ratory instructor at N.C. State University and worked
