TIMELINES
It was Commencement Day 1968, and photographer Jock Lauterer ’ 67 was covering the ceremonies in Kenan
Stadium when he saw this alignment of
profiles through his lens. The Review’s
editors labeled them “The Faces of ’ 68”
— four seniors on the day they became
alumni, seated on the front row of their
assembled classmates. As elsewhere, the
1960s at Carolina were marked by change;
some of that experience seems reflected in
their faces — the admission of women as
freshmen, conflicts over civil rights and the
war in Vietnam. Lauterer went on to co-
found, publish and edit newspapers, teach
at Penn State and write books before
returning to UNC in 2001. His work
teaching community journalism, photo-
journalism and newswriting has been rec-
ognized with numerous awards. In the
Review’s 100th year, we are looking back
at the magazine’s coverage of notable
moments, with a special anniversary issue
in September/October.
