Another Sorority
Moves Into House
After Delta Zeta sorority moved out in
2001, the brick building at 420 Hillsborough
St. sat empty for nearly 10 years. In 2009,
James Shortridge bought the place, built in
1990, with the idea of renting it out for
events and startup offices. But the Chapel
Hill permitting process proved too arduous,
and Shortridge leased the 10,000-square-
foot-plus edifice to Phi Beta Chi Christian
sorority in 2011. The sisters won’t move in
until later this year. Until then, they’ll use
the space for meetings and social events,
and generate revenue by renting out the 40
parking spaces.

On the Move
■ Front Porch closed its beach dive bar at
143 E. Franklin St. in February and is
looking for space in a local shopping
center.
■ Camos Bros. Pizza, formerly of The
Courtyard, has plans to reopen at 1704
E. Franklin St. in Gateway Center, the
shopping center anchored by Staples and
Whole Foods.
■ Mellow Mushroom, after leaving a spot
at 1502 E. Franklin St. in 2005, is moving into the space that used to be Ham’s,
at 310 W. Franklin St.
■ Scout & Molly’s, a women’s clothing
and accessories shop with five independently owned stores in the Triangle,
has closed its Meadowmont outlet and
moved to University Mall, in a space
that used to be part of Spice Street.
■ Maple View Farms has sold its Carrboro
store, at 100 E. Weaver St., across from
Weaver Street Market. But the new
store, called Fresh.taste, still sells Maple
View Farms ice cream. And whereas the
previous store closed from November
through March, new owner Chris
McCracken plans to keep Fresh.taste
open.
