Raleigh; Nov. 28, 2011. Bridger, a consulting engineer for FEMA, was a commissioner and Scoutmaster

of Crofton, Md.; Nov. 3, 2011. Canine retired from
the National Security Agency. He served in the Army

as a District Court judge in Mecklenburg County
after 18 years. After she earned her law degree, she

2011. Cherry worked in sales. He served in the

Wilmington; Nov. 18, 2011. Following a military career,
Christopher was owner and president of a shopping
center on Topsail Island. His career in the Air Force
included serving as a Strategic Air Command pilot, an
airlift controller in the Military Airlift Command and a
combat pilot in the Vietnam War. His honors included the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf
Cluster and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf
Clusters. At UNC, he belonged to Alpha Kappa Psi

77, of Concord; Nov. 5, 2011. Clark retired as a senior vice president with First Union Corp. He served in

AB), 87, of Fayetteville; Oct. 7, 2011. Clark retired as
an N.C. state probation officer. In WWII, he served in

Clinard retired as an officer in the Navy. He received
a presidential appointment to the Arms Control

Hall. As a law student, he belonged to Order of the

Copeland was a veterinarian who for many years
operated a small-animal hospital and then a large-animal practice devoted primarily to horses. He was
past president of the N.C. Veterinary Research
Foundation. He served in the Army Air Forces in WWII.
◆ Troy Lester Davis (’ 51, ’ 50 BSBA), 81, of Axton,
Va.; Oct. 5, 2011. After Davis retired as manager of
a Sears store, he was a professional photographer
and framer. A pioneer in the use of computers, he
developed a software program to track inventory for
Sears stores. In the Korean War, he served in the
Army Counterintelligence Corps. At UNC, he was
elected to Phi Beta Kappa, was first chair violin with
the symphony and was a member of Chi Phi, which
honored him for his academic achievements. ◆

Dec. 10, 2010. Dietzel was a human resources specialist with a manufacturing company. In the Korean

April 2, 2011. Freedy retired after a long career as
medical director of Battelle Memorial Institute in

Greensboro; Oct. 31, 2011. Gerringer retired from a
long career with Carolina Steel. In WWII, he was in

of Tarboro; Nov. 17, 2011. Goodwyn retired from a
22-year career in the Air Force. He was a radar navigator and bombardier; he served in the Vietnam

40 years, many of which were at the Children’s

Hatch Jr. (’ 50 AB, ’ 53 LLBJD), 83, of Raleigh; Nov.
22, 2011. Hatch was a lawyer in private practice in
Pittsboro and Raleigh and served in government. He
worked in the N.C. secretary of state’s office and, in
Washington, D.C., in the U.S. departments of justice
and commerce. In Raleigh, he was staff attorney for
Raleigh-Durham International Airport and with the
state Division of Highways. In WWII, he served in the
Army Air Corps. At UNC, he was elected to Phi Beta
Kappa and belonged to Chi Phi and Dialectic Society.

Haywood retired as an insurance adjuster. In WWII,

“Sonny” Hennis Jr. (’ 55), 78, of Mount Airy; Nov. 12,
2011. Hennis operated a business that furnished

5, 2011. Holland retired as president of Central
Atlanta Progress. He was involved in many community
activities, including serving on the ’ 96 Olympics

Dr. William Davis Huffines (’ 50, ’ 51 BSMED; ’ 55
MD), 84, of Chapel Hill; Oct. 17, 2011. Huffines was
professor emeritus of pathology at the UNC School
of Medicine. In his 41 years on the faculty, he was
associate dean of basic sciences for the medical
school and director of student laboratories and the
medical planning office. He was official scorekeeper
for the men’s basketball team for 30 years. In WWII,

Jr. (’ 52 ABJO), 81, of Monticello, Ga.; Oct. 16, 2011.
Hughes was owner and publisher of The Monticello
News. In the Korean War, he served in the Air Force,

Fla.; Nov. 11, 2011. Johnston retired as a senior
vice president with BB&T in Wilson. In retirement, he

ABEd), 76, of Abingdon, Md.; Sept. 26, 2011. Jung
retired as director of learning resources for Dundalk
Community College. In retirement, he and his wife

Joseph Kelly (’ 53 MEd), 89, of Winston-Salem; Oct.
14, 2011. Kelly retired as athletics department
chairman and coach at Elon College. In retirement,
he continued to work at Camp Sea Gull. In WWII, he
was a demolition specialist in the Army. He earned

(’ 51 ABEd), 84, of Raleigh; Nov. 24, 2011. King was
headmaster at Warren Academy. He had been a
teacher, coach and administrator in Warren County

of Emmaus, Pa.; Nov. 28, 2011. Labenberg was a
health and physical education teacher in the East
Penn school district. For many years, he was the
public address announcer for sports events. He

Lambert developed and owned Lambert Seafood Co.
After he sold the business, he spent most of his

BSCOM), 86, of Charlotte; Oct. 8, 2011. Layman
retired as a manager with the Ford Motor Co. He was
a Navy pilot. ◆ William Hendren Long (’ 50 AB), 85,
of Tallahassee, Fla.; Oct. 3, 2011. Long taught meteorology at Florida State University for almost 40
years. He was honored by the university for his undergraduate teaching skills. He was in the Army in WWII.
◆ William Hewetson Lorimer Jr. (’ 54), 79, of West
Melbourne, Fla.; Nov. 12, 2011. Lorimer was a pilot
in the Air Force and retired as a major in 1974. ◆
Warren Grey Love (’ 55 ABJO), 78, of The Villages,
Fla.; Nov. 11, 2011. Love retired as a colonel after
30 years in the Air Force. He was a command pilot
for a variety of aircraft and an administrative officer
for air traffic control. He received the Bronze Star,
among other honors. After he retired, he was an
analyst with a Pentagon contractor. At UNC, he was
in AFROTC and belonged to Phi Kappa Sigma. ◆
Dr. Douglas Keith MacDonald (’ 50 MPH), 85, of
Vancouver, British Columbia; Oct. 7, 2011. After working for the World Health Organization, MacDonald
became a family doctor, practicing for more than 40
years. He was a clinical professor of family medicine

2011. Manning was an artist and illustrator who
won a number of awards for her work. Her show A
Tennessee Family was exhibited at the Horace

North Miami Beach, Fla.; Nov. 7, 2011. McLane was
a physical education teacher. She worked at her
church as its secretary. In WWII, she served in the

80, of Brentwood, Tenn.; Nov. 4, 2011. Moore retired
as partner in a CPA firm. In the Korean War, he was
