Farewell
for Now
On the March afternoon in 1949 when this photo was taken, Frank Porter Gra-
ham (class of 1909) had been presi-
dent of the three-campus Consoli-
dated University for 18 years, and
the Sunday open houses for students
were a pleasant memory for a long
succession of classes. This day was
different — Graham had been
appointed to the U.S. Senate by
Gov. Kerr Scott and he was saying
goodbye to the place he had nur-
tured for so long. Ahead of him was
the nasty primary election the next
year that would cost him the seat.
He would serve in a United
Nations post for another two
decades before returning once
again to take an active, though
less official, role in Carolina’s
life. In the Review’s 100th year,
we are looking back at the
magazine’s coverage of
moments such as this, culmi-
nating in a special anniversary
issue in September/October.
