Edwards Sykes (’ 67 MEd, ’ 75 CGREd), 82, of Hampstead; Sept. 27, 2011. Sykes was a teacher, administrator and central office worker in the Raleigh/
Wake County school system. She was named Outstanding Administrator by the N.C. Parent Teacher
Association and the Wake County Administrator of
the Year. When she relocated to Pender County, she
was an administrator with the school system and
taught at UNC-Wilmington and Cape Fear Community
College. ◆ Alice Hammond Wooster (’ 67 MSLS),
80, of Carlisle, Pa.; July 25, 2011. Wooster had
been a teacher and medical reference librarian. She
lived for many years in Washington, D.C., and was
an active member of Potomac Pedalers, participating
in many long-distance bicycle trips.
’ 68 John Monie “Jack” Betts (’ 68 ABJO), formerly of Raleigh, retired as associate ditor of The Charlotte Observer in July
and has moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains near
Meadows of Dan, Va. Betts, who currently serves on
the GAA Board of Directors, also has been elected
to the board of trustees of the Blue Ridge Parkway
Foundation. ◆ G. Dickson Gribble Jr. (’ 68 AB) of
Columbia, Md., has been inducted into the Military
Intelligence Hall of Fame at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.
Gribble, a retired Army colonel, is vice president and
account executive with STRATIS. He was instrumental
in the development of policy and operational concepts
for the exchange of signals intelligence, facilitating
communication between the intelligence organizations
of NATO nations. ◆ Irvin White “Hank” Hankins III
(’ 68 AB, ’ 75 JD) of Charlotte has been appointed by
the N.C. State Bar Council as chair of the board of
trustees for Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts.
Hankins, general counsel and partner at Parker Poe,
served on the GAA Board of Directors (2003-04). ◆
Robert Flynn Orr (’ 68, ’ 71 AB; ’ 75 JD) of Raleigh
has been appointed to the UNC-TV board of trustees.
Orr is executive director and senior counsel for the
N.C. Institute for Constitutional Law and a former
associate justice of the N.C. Supreme Court. He
served for eight years on the N.C. Court of
Appeals. ◆ Gerald Wayne Woods (’ 68 BSBA) of
Augusta, Ga., has been named treasurer of the
National Association of College and University Attor-
neys. Woods is a lawyer with FisherBroyles, specializ-
ing in education and nonprofit law.

Barry Wayne Corbett (’ 68, ’ 69 AB), 65, of Chapel Hill;
Sept. 4, 2011. Corbett worked for many years for the
chief medical examiner’s office in Chapel Hill. ◆
Thomas Coolidge Thompson (’ 68 AB, ’ 69 MAT), 64,
of Sumter, S.C.; Aug. 29, 2011. Thompson was an
educator and administrator for the Sumter school
district. In retirement, he was an instructor for the
homebound.
’ 69 Mary Wayne Watson (’ 69 ABEd, ’ 72 MAT) of Knightdale served as grand marshal in the Centennial Parade in
Wagman and later presented a lecture, John
Charles McNeill: Poet Laureate’s Home Songs.
McNeill, who died in 1907, wrote about the landscapes of the Sandhills and is a member of Watson’s extended family. Watson is a lecturer in the

27, 2011. Bull had a 40-year career in sales in the
recreational vehicle industry. ◆ Betty Pickell
Cleaver (’ 69 MSLS), 88, of Durham; Aug. 8, 2011.
Cleaver retired as the first director of the Instructional Media Center at Ohio State University College of Education. She also taught courses at
Ohio State. She received the Edgar Dale Distinguished Service Award from The Ohio Educational
Library Media Association for her contributions to
library science. Previously, she was director of the
Instructional Media Center at UNC’s School of
Education. ◆ Harold Edward Hassenfelt Jr. (’ 69,
’ 70 BSBA), 64, of Wilmington; Sept. 15, 2011.
Hassenfelt was a restaurateur who owned Biscuit
Kitchen in Spring Lake and Shucker’s in Southern
Pines. At UNC, he belonged to Kappa Alpha Order.
◆ James Ronald Reed (’ 69 AB), 64, of Sylva;
Sept. 19, 2011. Reed owned a travel agency in
Austin, Texas, before retiring to Sylva. He was in the
Army. ◆ William Marion Welborn (’ 69 BSBA), 64,
of Salisbury; Sept. 24, 2011. Welborn was a
materials manager for a plastics company. He was
active in his church. At UNC, he belonged to Delta
Sigma Pi.
