John Richard Newton (’ 57 AB, ’ 65 LLBJD), 79, of
Wilmington; Aug. 12, 2011. Newton retired as a
maritime law attorney. Before attending law school,
he worked for the FBI and the National Security
Agency. For a year before starting his law career, he
was tour manager for the N.C. Symphony. He was an
electronics engineer in the Coast Guard. ◆ Richard
Hayne Palmer (’ 50 AB), 85, of Shelby; Aug. 18, 2011.
Palmer retired as owner of a gift store in Shelby and
was an independent sales representative for many
years. After he retired, he opened an antiques store
in Fallston. In WWII, he was in the Navy. At UNC, he
belonged to Kappa Sigma. ◆ Eugenia Strickland
Parker (’ 51, ’ 50 MA), 84, of Conway, S.C.; Aug. 5,
2011. Parker retired as a teacher with the Horry
County school district. ◆ Evelyn Burton Patterson
(’ 59 MEd), 93, of Hillsborough; Sept. 3, 2011.
Patterson taught school in Orange County for 44
years. Active in the community, she was honored by
the Soil & Water Conservation District, American Red
Cross and Orange County Recreation & Parks
Department, among others. She was appointed to
the Hillsborough Historical Commission by the governor. ◆ Genevieve Chandler “Sister” Peterkin (’ 51
MSLS), 83, of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; Sept. 18, 2011.
Peterkin was founding librarian of the Georgetown
County Public Library, then served on the Georgetown
County school board. She was an author who recorded the history of the Murrells Inlet area and an active
environmentalist who organized the Murrells Inlet
Protective Organization and the Brookgreen Guardians,
which protected the gardens from clear-cutting. She
received an honorary doctorate from Coastal Carolina
University in recognition of her environmental preservation work. ◆ William Norman Ponder Sr. (’ 58
BSPHR), 81, of Hendersonville; Aug. 1, 2011.
Ponder, a pharmacist, owned a local pharmacy for
many years. He served in the Army in the Korean
War. At UNC, he belonged to Rho Chi. ◆ Chalmers
Marshall Port (’ 54 ABEd), 79, of Charleston, S.C.;
Aug. 20, 2011. Port was head baseball coach at The
Citadel for 27 years, with a winning record for 24
seasons. When he retired, he was the “winningest”
coach in military school history. For the 10 years
previously, he coached football at the school as well.
His many honors included The Sporting News
National College Coach of the Year and Atlantic
Regional Division I Coach of the Year twice. He was
an active member of the American Baseball Coaches
Association for 31 years and served on a variety of
its committees. He was in the Air Force during the
Korean War. At UNC, he belonged to AFROTC, played
baseball and football, and received the Patterson
Award his senior year for most outstanding athlete. ◆
Patricia Barlowe Reamy (’ 57 ABEd), 75, of San
Antonio; Aug. 30, 2010. Early in her career, Reamy
was a teacher, then a volunteer at charities. She was
president of the San Antonio area Carolina Club during the ’90s. ◆ Clayton Henry Rechenbach (’ 51,
’ 50 MEd), 92, of Richmond, Va.; Aug. 20, 2011.
Rechenbach was a coach, teacher and principal in
the Richmond public schools. His 1954 John Marshall
High School basketball team won the state championship. He was a college basketball official in the
Southern and Old Dominion athletic conferences. In
WWII, he was in the Navy. ◆ Warren Dodd Reibel
(’ 53, ’ 55 BSBA), 79, of Dunwoody, Ga.; Aug. 8,
2011. Reibel retired from New York Life Insurance
Co. In the Korean War, he was in the Army. ◆ Dr.
Thomas Beauregard Reid Jr. (’ 52 AB, ’ 56 DDS), 79,
of Jacksonville; Sept. 15, 2011. Reid was a dentist.
