BUDGET CUTS GET REAL
‘Things No Longer Available’
The unabashedly shiny and declara- tive blog ILoveMyHSL.org is a kind of ongoing virtual valentine
to UNC’s Health Sciences Library, where
users are invited to don only their positive-thinking caps as they share stories that
explain the indispensability of the campus
facility that serves Carolina’s health and
medical professional schools.
Some entries are what you might
expect (“The librarians helped me find rel-
evant literature when I felt at a dead end.”)
and some are meant for fun (“I love the
coffee!”). But either way, campus libraries
could use all the hugs and java flattery they
can muster these days. The heart of the
campus information system, which
includes the House Undergraduate and
Davis libraries, as well as the HSL and law
library, is absorbing a 12. 7 percent, $3.7
million budget cut that will affect collec-
tions and personnel now and for months
to come.
