MRP), 85, of Middletown, Conn.; July 27, 2011. Reif
retired as city planner of Middletown. In addition, he
was an architect. He served in the Navy in the

Waynesville; Aug. 10, 2011. A career educator with
Haywood County schools, Wyatt retired as principal
of an elementary school and oversaw planning and
building of a new elementary school. At his death,
he was in his second term on the local school
board. At UNC, he belonged to Pi Kappa Phi.
’ 72 David Whit Owens (’ 72 AB, ’ 74 MRP, ’ 75 JD) of Chapel Hill is the recipient of the first Edward Kidder Graham UNC
Faculty Service Award. Owens is the Gladys Hill
Coates Professor of public law and government and
a longtime member of the UNC Buildings and
Grounds Committee. Most recently he facilitated
the development agreement between UNC and the
Town of Chapel Hill for the planned Carolina North

Roberts (’ 72 ABEd, ’ 76 MAT) of Durham has been
named head of baseball development for Smart-Sports to oversee the launch of SmartKage, a proprietary, patented technology system that quantitatively measures athletic performance. Roberts
served as head coach of the UNC men’s baseball
team, led two Division I teams to the NCAA College
World Series and coached his son, Brian Michael
Roberts (’00), an All-Star second baseman for the
Baltimore Orioles.

2011 Distinguished Leadership Award from the UNC
School of Education. Martin is a retired public
school administrator, president and founder of Martin Education Associates and a co-founder of The
Leadership Group for the Carolinas, an education-administration consulting group. Martin served on

Hart Sayre (’ 73 AB) of Raleigh has received a 2011
Distinguished Alumnus Award from UNC. Sayre is a
sculptor and co-founder of the design firm
Clearscapes. His work includes commissions and
public projects at the Raleigh Convention Center,
Nationals Baseball Stadium in Washington, D.C., the
N.C. Museum of Art and the Charlotte Arena. His latest commission is the design of a gateway sculpture
for Chapel Hill.

Savannah, Ga.; Sept. 27, 2011. Upson owned Four
Seasons Garden Center, which received an award

a nonprofit to preserve the history and ecology of a
rice plantation. In the Air Force, he was an air traffic controller. He was an Eagle Scout and was
inducted into the Order of the Arrow.

Municipal Lawyers Association. McCarley has served
as city attorney for Charlotte since 1994 and served
