Those who know him say new Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille ’ 99 (MPH) might have the
right combination of health care and international experience to help the poor Caribbean nation
devastated by an earthquake two years ago.

He also was a research scientist at Columbia
University’s Earth Institute, run by economist
Jeffrey Sachs and known for its focus on sustainable development. He is a protege of
Harvard University Professor Paul Farmer,
known for his implementation of community-based health care initiatives for the poor, including an extensive program originating in rural
Haiti.
Conille “knows the mixed fabric of non-
governmental organizations, governmental
organizations and Haitian government struc-
tures,” says Deborah Jenson, professor of
Romance studies and co-director of the FHI
Haiti Humanities Lab at Duke University and a
member of the UNC-Duke Consortium in
Latin American and Caribbean Studies. “Being
able to create a more collaborative, responsive
and accountable fabric of interconnection
between those different elements,” she said, “will
be key to Haiti’s recovery.”
In short, she said, “Garry Conille is going to
be operating in two distinct worlds.”
One of those is the world of “international
development, the U.N., the IHRC, Bill Clinton
and Jeffrey Sachs,” she said. The other is “a
Haitian government that is extremely wary of
outside influences.”
‘I need you to come and help me’
It’s a challenge, Conille said, that he could
not turn down.
Conille had just begun a new U.N. assignment in Niger when Haitian President Michel
Martelly tapped him to be prime minister.
“Michel Martelly looked me in the eye and
told me, ‘I need you to come and help me put
these kids in school,’ ” Conille told The Miami
Herald. “ ‘I need you to come and help me with
this whole camp situation. I just don’t know how
to do it. I need you.’ How can you look the guy
in the eye and say, ‘It’s your problem, I’m going
back to Niger.’ How do you do that?”
So Conille said yes.
