Southport and Oak Island. He was a founding
member and president of the Southport-Oak Island
Chamber of Commerce and served on a committee to establish a library in Oak Island. At UNC, he

(’ 70 MEd), 93, of Enfield; June 18, 2011. Walker
was a speech pathologist and elementary school
teacher in Halifax County. She also worked for the
Halifax County Missionary Union. She was active in
her church, where she organized clubs and taught
Sunday school.
’ 71 Peter Thomas Kissinger (’ 71 PhD) of West Lafayette, Ind., has been appointed to the board of directors for
Chembio Diagnostics Inc., which creates, markets
and licenses point-of-care diagnostic tests.
Kissinger is founder and chairman emeritus of Bio-analytical Systems Inc. and a professor of chemistry and associate department head at Purdue
University.

Daryl Everett Coleman (’ 71 MAT), 70, of
Hotchkiss, Colo.; June 10, 2011. Coleman retired
as a teacher after 34 years, teaching in Colorado,
Oregon and Misawa Air Base in Japan. He was
president of the local teachers’ union several times.
He served in the Navy as an aviation electronics
technician. ◆ W. Michael Griffin (’ 71 BSBA), 69, of
Birmingham, Ala.; June 22, 2011. Griffin retired
after a 30-year career with General Electric. He
served in the Navy before attending UNC. ◆ Daniel
Henry Hill (’ 71 AB), 63, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; July 10,
2011. Hill retired as a research scientist at the
University of Michigan’s Institute for Survey
Research. He was in the Army in the Vietnam War.
At UNC, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. ◆ Pamela
Elton Jenks (’ 71, ’ 75 AB), 62, of Raleigh; June 21,
2011. Jenks was active in her church in Raleigh. ◆
Douglas Lee Peeler (’ 71 AB), 62, of Austin, Texas;
June 18, 2011. Peeler was self-employed as a
fundraiser. At UNC, he belonged to Sigma Nu.
’ 72 Kenneth Burdette Lee (’ 72 MBA) of Durham has been elected to the board of BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. Lee is
a general partner with Hatteras Venture Partners
LLC, a venture capital fund focusing on life science
companies. ◆ Christopher Glenn Sawyer (’ 72 AB) of
Atlanta has been named chair of the board of visitors for the UNC Institute for the Environment.
Sawyer is a partner at Alston & Bird, where he specializes in working with boards, CEOs and senior
management on issues relating to corporate governance, strategic and business planning, finance, the
environment and real estate.

Helen Leppard Callison (’ 72, ’ 71 MSLS), 83, of
Eugene, Ore., July 9, 2011. Callison was a teacher
and librarian in elementary and high schools in
South Carolina. She was an organizer and charter
member of the S.C. Library Association and held
numerous offices in the organization. She also
taught continuing education courses for school
librarians. ◆ Arthur Leonard “Skip” Lefler Jr. (’ 72),
60, of Tallahassee, Fla.; July 9, 2011. Lefler was an
ordained minister for the United Pentecostal Church.
He retired as a state operations management consultant manager for Florida.
’ 73 Max Oliver Cogburn Jr. (’ 73 AB) of Asheville has been named a judge for the U.S. District Court, Western District
of N.C. Cogburn succeeds Lacy Herman Thornburg
(’ 52 AB, ’ 54 LLB), who retired in 2009. ◆ Richard
Reardon (’ 73 AB) of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, has completed his term as associate vice president and center executive officer at the University of Idaho-Coeur
d’Alene, where he is an associate dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences and professor of psychology.

faculty member at the State University of New York-Buffalo. At UNC, he belonged to Rho Chi. ◆ Floyd
Henry Edwards (’ 73, ’ 72 EdD), 83, of Johnson City,
Tenn.; July 15, 2011. Edwards was professor emeritus in the College of Education at East Tennessee
State University, where he also served as associate
and acting dean of the college. As well as heading
special education programs, he was the higher education consultant for the Tennessee school superintendent’s advisory board. He was president of the

9, 2011. Hobbs was a magistrate for Chatham
County and owned a self-storage business. At UNC,
he belonged to Alpha Kappa Psi. ◆ Dr. Donald
Munro McIntosh II (’ 73 AB), 60, of Gaffney, S.C.;
July 11, 2011. McIntosh was an internist, most
recently with the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare
System. Previously, he was with Upstate Carolina
Medical Center. He served on a number of community boards, including Options Medical/Cherokee
Pregnancy Center. At UNC, he belonged to Sigma Phi
Epsilon. ◆ James Pierce Murray (’ 73 AB, ’ 81 JD),
60, of Miami; June 2, 2011. Murray was a partner in
the law firm Fowler White Burnett. In addition to his
numerous professional affiliations, he had been
president of the Miami Beach Rod and Reel Club.
He served in the Navy. At UNC, he belonged to Order

MPH), 79, of Raleigh; June 27, 2011. Pomerans
was a general practitioner in Warrenton. He served

Buie “Butch” Stone Jr. (’ 73), 62, of Charlotte; June
9, 2011. Stone, a real estate appraiser, was a vocalist with The Poor Souls, a musical group inducted
into the Beach Music Hall of Fame. The group had
recently released a new CD, Try to Remember.

30, 2011. McGarry was a lawyer who practiced with
