CAROLINA WOMEN IN FOCUS
Carolina women are leaders in their fields, and they volunteer
their time, energy and expertise serving on University boards
and championing Carolina in their home regions. The Carolina
Women’s Leadership Council is a network of women from all over
the country, committed to supporting the University. In addition
to members’ individual gifts, the council funds the Faculty
Mentoring Awards. For more information, contact Lanier Brown
May at 919-843-5883 or lanier_may@unc.edu.

member Shelayne Sutton is all about family.
She is a partner with her six siblings in
business, wife to Frank Sutton ’ 82 and mother of
five – Carolina graduate (Natalie ’ 11), and current
Carolina student (Grant ’ 15).
“We have lived in Chapel Hill for 17 years, and
feel fortunate to be part of the Carolina family,”
she said. “Families support each other, meeting
needs and ensuring future success. Happiness in
life does not come from what we get out of it, but
what we put into it. Each of us has the opportunity
to make a di;erence and do great things for others.”
Shelayne, a UVA graduate, serves on the UNC
Board of Visitors, and previously on the Board of
SECU Family House. The Suttons have supported
Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Eve Carson
Scholarship and the Morehead-Cain Foundation,
among other areas. “We believe education changes
lives, and Carolina is making that a reality every
single day for thousands of young people,” Shelayne
said. “Giving back to Carolina, not just financially,
but in time and spirit helps us remember that the
only thing that lasts is what we pass on. Go Heels!”
