Row Your,

Mario ’ 80 is
always up for a
sports challenge.
“Whether it’s
tiddlywinks or
wrestling,” he says,
“if there is a good competition to be had, I’m
all for it.”
So Mario, who was on the wrestling team at
Carolina, was not happy to feel age exacerbating
old wrestling injuries. He dropped back from
triathlons to riding a bicycle.
Then he discovered the rowing ergometer, or
“erg,” as its fans call it. Mario still rides a bicycle, but this winter he will compete in his second C.R.A.S.H.-B. international indoor rowing
competition. This year, in his first competition,
he plowed the erg to a time of 6 minutes, 45
seconds, and 18th place in his class.

on land with
rowing machines
Carter Mario ’ 80 rows his erg at the C.R.A.S.H.-B competition at Boston University in
February. The rowing machine provides an “all-body, consuming exercise,” he says.
If C.R.A.S.H.-B. and erg mean nothing to
you, that’s about where the Connecticut resident
was last year when a couple of the other dads at
his sons’ wrestling practice started bragging about
their days of rowing at Harvard. They told Mario
that a seven-minute race on a rowing machine
was just as hard as a seven-minute bout on the
wrestling mat. They raved about C.R.A.S.H.-B.
(Charles River All-Star Has Beens), a 2,000-
meter rowing competition started by disgrun-
tled rowers closed out of the 1980 Olympics
when the U.S. boycotted the games to protest
the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. The
ergometer is a rowing machine developed by
Concept2, a brainchild of Stanford rowers.
