Review, Student
Programs Win
National Awards
The Carolina Alumni Review and the old- est GAA-sponsored student group,
Order of the Bell Tower, have received
national recognition from the Council for
Advancement and Support of Education.
The Review earned a Silver Award in
CASE’s Best Articles of the Year category
for a profile in the September/October
2010 issue written by Beth McNichol ’ 95,
“The Client She’ll Never Give Up On.”
The article focused on Christine Mumma
’ 85 and her work with the North
Carolina Center on Actual Innocence,
founded to help get wrongfully convicted
people declared innocent. Mumma also
earned her law degree from UNC in
1998.
McNichol, a former associate editor of
the Review, is a freelance writer who
writes regularly for the magazine. Seventy-four entries were judged, and two Gold,
three Silver and two Bronze awards were
given. The GAA’s publications have been
recognized with national or Southeast district CASE awards each year since 1996.
The Order of the Bell Tower received
recognition in the Outstanding Internal
Program category for its “Histories and
Mysteries Tour,” an annual program
launched in 2008 designed to acclimate
new OBT members to the group. The
program leads the group on a specialized,
private campus tour including myths and
legends of campus. It begins in Wilson
Library after hours and continues on a
guided tour of the University.
OBT serves as the official student
ambassadors and tradition keepers to the
University. It was one of 18 winners at
CASE’s Affiliated Student Advancement
Programs (CASE ASAP) annual Network
Convention in Nashville, Tenn.
The CASE ASAP annual awards recognize outstanding student and adviser leadership and achievements as well as outstanding student educational advancement
programming by member organizations.
More than 650 students and advisers from
133 student advancement organizations
participated in this year’s convention.
The awards were announced in late
June. ;
