SIGHTINGSSIGHTINGS
As the Occupy Wall Street movement grew in
October, several dozen participants created
Occupy Chapel Hill in front of the U.S. Post
Office on East Franklin Street. Some in the
cooperative demonstration stayed overnight for
weeks, and the approach to Halloween —
when tradition has it that Franklin Street is
occupied in an altogether different way —
spurred discussions with law enforcement.
“Our police department has a long history of
helping people safely express themselves,”
Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue ’90 told The
Chapel Hill News. “We’re interested in keeping
folks safe who are expressing themselves.”
