Melvin Kirven (’ 51), 82, of Cary; May 10, 2011.
Kirven retired as president and general manager of
Environmental Comfort Co. He was active in his
church, teaching Bible study for many years. At UNC,
he belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha. ◆ Wilma Jones
Knox (’ 51 AB, ’ 54 MA), 81, of Biloxi, Miss.; April 9,
2011. Knox was a clinician and researcher at the
Gulfport-Biloxi VA Medical Center. Much of her
research involved attitudes and treatment of alco-
holism and drug abuse. She was named Woman of
the Year by Business and Professional Women and
received awards from local and state mental health
associations. In retirement, she wrote three myster-
ies centered in Biloxi. At UNC, she belonged to Pi
Beta Phi. ◆ Joseph Frank Koster Jr. (’ 58 AB), 76, of
New York; May 11, 2011. Koster was a merchandis-
ing manager. In addition, he was a writer. At UNC, he
belonged to Pi Kappa Phi. ◆ Betty McReynolds
Layson (’ 53 BSLS), 81, of Columbia, S.C.; May 12,
2011. Layson retired as librarian of an area high
school. She was former president of Columbia
Council for Internationals. ◆ Edgar Ray Loessin (’ 51
AB), 82, of Norfolk, Va.; April 22, 2011. Loessin
retired as chairman of the drama department at
East Carolina University, where he established a the-
ater department and directed plays and musicals.
Previously, he was active in professional theater in
New York, and his work in N.C. theater was recog-
nized with the Carolina PlayMakers Outstanding
Alumni Award and the O. Max Gardner Award. In
retirement, he was arts critic for a Norfolk radio sta-
tion. He served with the Army in military intelligence.
◆ Sally Osborne Mackie (’ 50 AB), 82, of
Blacksburg, Va.; April 24, 2011. Mackie, executive
secretary for the Episcopal Appalachian Ministries,
served as a board member of the League of Women
Voters and the Mental Health Association and found-
ed the Voluntary Action Center. At UNC, she belonged
to Order of the Valkyries, Order of the Old Well, Alpha
Gamma Delta and student government. ◆ William
D. MacRae (’ 50), 82, of Concord; May 17, 2011.
MacRae, whose career was with General Motors
Acceptance Corp., owned a frame shop in Tega Cay
with his wife. He belonged to the Tega Cay Fire
Department, volunteered with the police department
and taught sailing to children at Camp Thunderbird
for many summers. At UNC, he belonged to Alpha
Tau Omega. ◆ Dr. James Archibald McCallum II
(’ 55 AB), 78, of Clayton, Wash.; May 19, 2011.
McCallum was a general practitioner. He was a cap-
tain in the National Guard. At UNC, he belonged to
Pi Kappa Phi. ◆ Charles Harold Metcalfe Jr. (’ 55
AB), 78, of Gastonia; May 1, 2011. Metcalfe special-
ized in drug and alcohol addiction counseling for the
U.S. Probation Office and as director of the Gastonia
Mental Health Center. In retirement, he volunteered
with a variety of addiction centers. ◆ David Michael
Milligan (’ 52), 83, of Washington, N.C.; April 11,
2011. Milligan was a writer for The Washington Daily
News and published the Beaufort-Hyde News, receiv-
ing awards from The Associated Press and the N.C.
Press Association for feature writing. His second
career was as an elementary school teacher.
Washington honored him for his accomplishments in
urban renewal. He served in the Army in WWII. ◆
Mary Winborne Moore (’ 59), 73, of Danville, Va.;
April 7, 2011. Moore retired after a career as a
medical laboratory technologist at Danville Memorial
Hospital. ◆ Charles Bishop Owen (’ 52), 80, of
Grove City, Ohio; Nov. 28, 2010. Owen worked in the
insurance business and served in the Air Force. ◆
Bedford Jackson “Buck” Page Sr. (’ 56 MEd), 85, of
Yanceyville; May 22, 2011. After retiring as a
teacher and coach at schools in Richmond and
Caswell counties, Page was bus supervisor at
Bartlett-Yancey High School. He was a Boy Scout
Scoutmaster and a member of Order of the Arrow. In
WWII, he served in the Navy. ◆ Ross Lombard Parks
(’ 52 PhD), 90, of Fletcher; April 22, 2011. Parks
retired from Monsanto Research Corp. as a chemist
in textile manufacturing. He served in the Army in
WWII and received the Purple Heart. ◆ Donald
Sutton Patterson Sr. (’ 58 BSBA), 75, of Chapel Hill;

of reunions for his shipmates. At UNC, he
belonged to Kappa Psi.
