Rose Pully (’ 49 CMED), 91, of Kinston; April 8,
2011. Pully, who practiced medicine in Kinston,
received the UNC medical school’s Distinguished
Service Award and served on its board of visitors.
She also was named Kinston Citizen of the Year and
was inducted into the Lenoir Memorial Hospital Hall
of Fame. ◆ Sanford Miller Reece Sr. (’ 40 AB, ’ 41
MA), 94, of Portland, Ore.; April 6, 2011. Reece,
who owned and operated Wind Hill Vineyards, previ-
ously was general director for the YMCA in Portland.
At UNC, he was active in Playmakers Theater and
studied with Paul Green. He was in Marching Band.
◆ Dr. Franklin Cooper Reyner (’ 43, ’ 94 BSCH), 86,
of Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.; Aug. 1, 2010. Reyner
retired as an obstetrics and gynecology physician on
Long Island in New York. With the need for doctors
in WWII, Reyner was placed in medical school before
he completed his bachelor’s degree, serving in WWII
as an Army medical officer. He completed his under-
graduate degree at UNC 53 years after he first
entered the University. In his early student days, he
belonged to Tau Epsilon Phi. ◆ Dr. Charles Joseph
Savarese Jr. (’ 42 AB), 91, of Little River, S.C.; May
19, 2011. Savarese, a family medicine and cardiol-
ogy physician, most recently practiced in Shallotte.
He had been an assistant to the physician to Con-
gress. A Navy veteran of WWII, he also served in the
Navy Reserve in the Korean and Vietnam wars. At
UNC, he was a student government member. ◆
Charles Baldwin Seward (’ 47, ’ 50 AB), 84, of Mar-
ion, Va.; March 31, 2011. Seward retired as the
owner of a real estate business. He had been a
town councilman, president of the Realtors’ board
and a district vice chairman for the Boy Scouts. In
WWII, he served in the Army. He belonged to Phi
Delta Theta at UNC. ◆ Mary Foy Space (’ 46), 86, of
Savannah, Ga.; May 25, 2011. Space retired from
Johnson Lane as a stockbroker. In 1964, she was
one of the first female registered stockbrokers in
the country. She was active in the Savannah chapter
of the Daughters of the American Republic for more
than 60 years. ◆ Kate Swift (’ 44 ABJO), 87, of East
Haddam, Conn.; May 7, 2011. Swift was a writer
and editor who specialized in nonsexist language.
With a co-author, she wrote Words and Women and a
Handbook of Nonsexist Writing, with articles on
removing sexism from language appearing in
national publications. She served in the Army as an
information and education specialist and headed
the press office of Yale University School of Medi-
cine. At UNC, where she was known as Barbara, she
was on The Daily Tar Heel staff, belonged to Dialectic
Society and was a senior class officer. ◆ Ann
Hommann Thibaut (’ 46), 90, of Chapel Hill; Feb. 17,
2011. Thibaut owned The Arts Gallery of Chapel Hill
and Carrboro for 30 years. In WWII, she worked in
Washington, D.C., with the Office of Strategic Serv-
ices and was a welder in a California shipyard. ◆
Lane Eugene Thomas (’ 48), 84, of Greensboro; April
11, 2011. Thomas, who worked in the automobile
business, served in the Army. At UNC, he belonged
to Zeta Psi and was on the basketball team. ◆
Mary Jo Twitty (’ 47 AB), 87, of Cocoa Beach, Fla.;
May 6, 2011. Twitty retired as a speech therapist in
Baltimore. ◆ Edward Adolph Vause (’ 47 AB, ’ 49
MA), 86, of Raleigh; April 19, 2011. Vause retired as
chairman of the English department at Lenoir Com-
munity College. In WWII, he served in the Army Fire
Direction Center of a field artillery group. ◆ Robert
Lee Warren (’ 49 LLB) 95, of Concord; May 21,
2011. Warren retired as chief District Court judge of
Cabarrus and Rowan counties. A lawyer, he was
counsel for the towns of Concord and Mount Pleas-
ant and a prosecutor and judge for the Recorder’s
Court in Cabarrus County. In WWII, he was a pilot in
the Army Air Forces. ◆ Lucien Orville Gail “Log”
Whaley (’ 46 AB), 88, of Panama City, Fla.; May 24,
2011. For 32 years during WWII and the Korean and
Vietnam wars, Whaley served in the Navy, retiring as
commanding officer of the Naval Coastal Systems
Laboratory. Most recently, he worked in the real
estate and hotel industries. At UNC, he belonged to
Kappa Alpha Order, NROTC and the men’s track and
field team. ◆ Richard Lindsey Wharton (’ 42 AB),
89, of Greensboro; May 21, 2011. Wharton, who
practiced law for more than 50 years, was president
of the Greensboro Bar Association, president and
life director of the Children’s Home Society of North
Carolina and an elder in his church. He was a found-
ing director of Lawyers Mutual Liability Insurance Co.
of North Carolina. In WWII, he was in the Army Corps
of Engineers, then served in Europe. At UNC, he
graduated Phi Beta Kappa and belonged to Phi Delta
Theta. ◆ McCulloch B. Wilson Jr. (’ 46), 86, of Wilm-
ington; March 30, 2011. After retiring from the mili-
tary, Wilson worked at the county library and wrote a
book review column for The Fayetteville Observer. He
was a rifle squad leader in WWII, a heavy weapons
company commander in the Korean War, an intelli-
gence officer and a leader of a search-and-recovery
team and became a psychological operations
