to do research in each other’s clinics. But we
will be taking our findings and passing them
up and down the development ladder.”
Margolis says he believes Carolina was
chosen because it is one of the leading
institutions in the world for AIDS research.
“UNC is certainly underappreciated for
that. Especially in trying to translate the
research into clinical studies, our research
group is one of few in the world.”
The NIH named this eradication effort
after Martin Delaney, a longtime activist for
public-private partnership in the search for
a cure for AIDS and HIV. He was one of
the first Americans to aggressively publicize
the importance of HIV testing and the
pursuit of treatment for infected individu-
als. Delaney died in 2009 from lung cancer.
“I know that Marty would be pleased
by these awards,” said David Evans, Project
Inform’s director of research advocacy and
a longtime activist.
