Co-owner Cheryle Jernigan-Wicker ’ 70
said that as part of the transition, the shop no
longer carries some items that had appealed
to college students — craft items and fashion accessories. Instead, the new store displays,
salon style, the work of artists whom Jernigan-Wicker represents. Toots & Magoo, which
provides appraisal services and has resources
for framing, also sells antiques on consignment.
“We have to be creative in this new
economy,” she said.

Skate Hard Rolls Into Mall
In the other half of the former Children’s
Store space comes a sort of toy store for
teens. Skate Hard opened April 30, selling
skateboards, roller skates and all the protective gear, clothing and paraphernalia that go
with sports on human-powered wheels.
Chapel Hill’s skate park has a small shop
and concession stand on site, so until Skate
Hard opened at University Mall, serious
skaters headed to Durham or Raleigh to
equip themselves. Skate Hard sells helmets,
knee and elbow pads and skating DVDs and
posters; the store takes special orders without
charging for overnight shipping. It also
repairs skateboards.
To generate interest in skating, the store
will sponsor skateboarders and roller derby
participants with promise. Interested skaters
can drop off a video at the store to show
their prowess.

Fleet Feet On the Move
After 12 years in Carr Mill Mall and five
years next to Tyler’s before that, Fleet Feet
plans to settle in July into the space most
recently filled by the Carrboro VisArt Video.
The new store will double the floor space
of its Carr Mill Mall store, allowing room for
products to be organized into separate men’s,
women’s and kids’ sections and expanding the
fitting and demonstration space.
Sporting goods stores have flourished
despite the tight economy. The Fleet Feet
chain has 90 stores nationwide and relocated
its corporate headquarters from California to
Carrboro in 2006.
