Class of ’ 61 Members Have Their Day in the Sun
Rain fell in sheets at Kenan Stadium as
the GAA staff arrived at Kenan Football
Center to set up the breakfast buffet early
Sunday. But by the time the class of ’ 61
stepped off the elevator at the fifth floor,
the rain had tapered to a drizzle. Once
they were enrobed and waiting in the
tunnel to go out onto the field, only a
thin layer of clouds covered the sun but
couldn’t dim the smiles of the 50th reunion
celebrants as they entered the stadium.
The GAA has been providing the
opportunity for 50th reunion classes to
march in the Commencement procession
since 2000.
This year’s procession was a first for
Tom Nicholas ’ 61 of Raleigh, who didn’t
finish his coursework until August of that
year. “There was no marching in August,”
he said.
Tony Rand ’ 61 of Fayetteville didn’t go
to his graduation because “it wasn’t a big
deal then,” he said. But 50 years later, it’s a
bigger deal. “Just having lived this long is a
big deal,” he said.
As a former cheerleader, Georgia
Johnson ’ 61 of New Bern had been on
the field many times but walking in the
processional was a thrill. Fifty years ago,
Betty Lou Savage Allen ’ 61 of
Spartanburg, S.C., opted for the beach
instead of Commencement but was glad
she came back this year. “I was real proud
of myself for marching,” she said.
