Before becoming a
minister, he taught
chemistry at Clarkson College of Technology in
Potsdam, N. Y. He received a Distinguished
Service Award from the Unitarian Universalist
Association. In WWII, he was in the Marine
Corps. He was active in People of Faith Against
the Death Penalty. At UNC, he graduated Phi
Beta Kappa, was a sportswriter for The Daily Tar
Heel, was on the men’s track team and
belonged to Alpha Chi Sigma.
League. At UNC, she belonged to Alpha Delta Pi. u
Charles Leslie Jones (’ 44 BSGEO), 87, of Tucson,
Ariz.; March 18, 2010. Jones retired as a geologist
with the U.S. Geological Survey. u G. Andrew Jones
Jr. (’ 49 LLB), 89, of Hampstead; Dec. 2, 2009. Jones
spent his career working for the state of North
Carolina, retiring as legal counsel for the N.C.
Administrative Office of the Courts. He also had been
attorney to the N.C. Highway Commission and to the
secretary of revenue. He was a Navy fighter pilot in
WWII. u Carolyn Carter “Chick” Johnson (’ 48 AB),
84, of Cary; July 11, 2010. Johnson was a longtime
member of the Wake County Weavers’ Guild and made
baskets, throws and clothing material. At UNC, she
belonged to Alpha Delta Pi. u Eugene Hall Johnstone
(’ 49 AB), 88, of Chestertown, Md.; Aug. 25, 2010.
Much of Johnstone’s career was in publishing, where
he was an account executive with McCall Printing,
then vice president of Barton-Cotton Publishing. In
semi-retirement, he was a real estate agent in
Chestertown and president of the county historical
society. In WWII, he was in the Navy. At UNC, he was
on the publications board, was editor of the Yackety
Yack and belonged to Kappa Sigma and NROTC. u
Phyllis Irene Kelley (’ 44), 94, of Peterborough, N.H.;
Aug. 15, 2010. Kelley had a long career at Wellesley
College as associate director of financial aid.
Previously, she was executive director of the Council
for Greater Boston Camp Fire Girls and taught physi-
cal education at UNC. u Jennie French Kiely (’ 43
AB), 88, of Bluefield, W.Va.; July 26, 2010. Kiely was
a coal company executive, serving as president of
one company and vice president of the other. At
UNC, she belonged to Dialectic Society and Pi Beta
Phi. u Dr. Odell Culp Kimbrell Jr. (’ 49 CMED), 83, of
Raleigh; Aug. 13, 2010. Kimbrell retired from private
practice of internal medicine and endocrinology in
Raleigh. From 1978 to 1990, he was clinical profes-
sor of medicine with the UNC Area Health Education
Centers at WakeMed. He was medical director for a
national life insurance company for 30 years. In the
Korean War, he served in the Air Force Medical Corps.
u Suzanne Small Kirkland (’ 49 AB), 82, of Hayes,
Va.; July 18, 2010. Kirkland retired from a position at
Colonial Williamsburg. u Richard Moore Kiser (’ 46),
85, of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; Nov. 21, 2009. Kiser
worked in the motion picture industry as a writer, pro-
duction designer, scenic artist and actor, appearing in
films and television. In WWII, he served in the Army
Air Forces. At UNC, he was a member of Chi Phi, Glee
Club and Playmakers. u John Henry Lewis (’ 41 AB,
’ 42 BSLS), 90, of Statesville; June 20, 2010. Lewis, a
librarian, had positions in Richmond, Va., and Orlando,
Fla. In WWII, he was an artillery range finder in the
Army. He worked for the U.S. Information Services in
Saigon and Paris, translating English novels into
French. u Morris C. Lumpkin (’ 44), 88, of Columbia,
S.C.; Aug. 5, 2010. Lumpkin retired as president of
the Columbia branch of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. He
also was vice president of two other companies. In
WWII, he was in the Army Air Corps. At UNC, he
belonged to Phi Gamma Delta. u Gale White
“Margie” Lucas (’ 42 AB), 87, of Hendersonville; July
28, 2010. Lucas was the longtime general supervisor
of Washington County schools. She was president of
the Washington County Arts Council and served on
the N.C. Textbook Commission. u Daniel Summey
Marshall (’ 49 BSCOM), 84, of Arden; July 29, 2010.
Marshall was an educator at Woodberry Forest School
in Virginia and A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville.
He taught math and psychology and worked as a
counselor. At UNC, he belonged to Phi Mu Alpha and
Glee Club. u Dr. W. Benson McCutcheon Jr. (’ 48
AB), 83, of Durham; July 16, 2010. McCutcheon was
a surgeon in Durham for 30 years, specializing in
thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. He served in the
Air Force Medical Corps. He was chief resident in gen-
eral and thoracic surgery at N.C. Memorial Hospital
before establishing his practice. At UNC, he was
elected to Phi Beta Kappa, belonged to Phi Delta
Theta and Order of Gimghoul, served as president of
Alpha Epsilon Delta and was class president his sen-
ior year. u Winnifred Shell Nethercutt (’ 40), 92, of
Atlanta; June 28, 2010. Nethercutt was a community
volunteer, serving as a Girl Scout troop leader, a
Sunday school teacher and PTA president. u James
Franklin Peacock (’ 48 AB), 86, of Benson; June 28,
2010. Peacock retired as executive director of the
Benson Housing Authority. He was on the board of
directors of the local library and local history muse-
um. In WWII, he was in the Army Air Forces. u Dan
Francis Rice (’ 49), 85, of Charlotte; Aug. 26, 2010.
Rice retired from the Automatic Data Process Co. He
was a pilot in the Army Air Corps in WWII and with the
National Guard in the Korean War. u Margaret
McNeill Robertson (’ 48 AB), 84, of Sanford; Aug. 1,
2010. Robertson taught in the Lee County schools
for a number of years and was on the secretarial
staff of a life insurance company. u William Kivett
Slack (’ 47, ’ 51 BSBA), 83, of Charlotte; July 9, 2010.
Slack retired as an audit supervisor with the N.C.
Department of Revenue. He served in the Navy in
WWII. u Nancy Murphy Small (’ 45 AB), 86, of
Burgaw; June 28, 2010. Small taught in several N.C.
communities, usually working in special education.
She retired from West Pender School. She wrote The
House at Braman’s Landing, based on her grandpar-
ents’ home. She was a longtime docent for the
Pender County Museum. u Dr. David Garrison
Stroup (’ 46 CMED), 86, of Brentwood, Tenn.; July 7,
2010. Stroup, who specialized in obstetrics and
gynecology, practiced in Atlanta. He was chief of staff
at an Atlanta hospital and an adjunct instructor for
