’40s James Landis Chavasse (’ 49 BSCOM) of Raleigh won the 2009 USTA National Men’s 90 Clay Court
Doubles and was a finalist in the 90 Singles.
Chavasse won the NCTA 85 and 90 Singles and was a
finalist in the 80 Doubles. He holds an overall national
ranking of No. 2 in doubles and No. 6 in singles. u
Andy Griffith (’ 49 AB) of Manteo was honored during
the celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Andy
Griffith Show with a series of daily mini-marathon
broadcasts of the show starting on Aug. 22 and continuing through the debut anniversary date, Oct. 5.

William James Crabtree, 90, of Chapel Hill; July 3,
2010. Crabtree retired from UNC after 19 years of

Ann Dunbar, 72, of Hillsborough; July 6, 2010.
Dunbar taught in the history department, joining the
African and Afro-American studies specialty, then
co-chairing that curriculum for 10 years. She developed the courses that laid the groundwork for the
African and Afro-American studies department,
established in the 1980s. She was a longtime volunteer with the Dispute Settlement Center of
Orange County. Before coming to UNC, she did fieldwork in Niger and Senegal and taught the Hausa

Farmer was professor of neurology at the UNC

Durham; July 9, 2010. Garmon was a certified dental technician at UNC’s School of Dentistry in the
department of orthodontics and taught in the graduate program. He was co-owner of Garmon-Perez
Motorsports Racing and held six championships in
various racing divisions. He was twice named Driver
of the Year of the Southeastern Division. He was an

Sam Terry Bracken (’ 47), 87, of Smithson Valley,
Texas; April 18, 2010. Bracken was a home builder
and restorer of historic homes, a partner in an oil
company and a cattle rancher. He founded a Christian
school, supported community schools and provided
college assistance to needy students. In WWII, he was
in the Navy. u Howard Allen Brandman (’ 43), 89, of
Prescott, Ariz.; Feb. 24, 2010. Brandman worked for
the Housing and Urban Development department in
Washington, D.C. During WWII, he served in Europe
in the Army. He was recalled to active duty in the
Korean War, retiring from the Air Force in 1967. u
Joseph Shafter Brock (’ 40 MS), 94, of Silver Spring,
Md.; Nov. 25, 2009. Brock was a physicist with the
federal government. After graduation, he worked in
Washington, D.C., with the Navy. u Frederick Franklin
Brooks (’ 46), 86, of Hampstead; Aug. 26, 2010.
Brooks retired as co-owner and operator of Brooks
Warehouses and other businesses. At UNC, he

McCall, 89, of Raleigh; July 29, 2010. McCall
taught in several programs at UNC, including Kenan-Flagler Business School, the business school’s executive program, the Institute of Government (now
part of the School of Government) and the
Principals’ Executive Program (PEP). His honors
were numerous. The Jack McCall Award is given
annually in the PEP; the gardens at UNC’s Center
for School Leadership Development at the Friday
Center bear his name; and he was inducted into the
Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Before UNC, McCall
taught at N.C. State University and was chief psychologist for the N.C. Department of Correction. u

John Edward Reinhold, 84, of Asheville; Aug. 20,
2010. Reinhold was a counselor with UNC Health
Services (1975-92). In WWII, he was a command
gunner with the Army Air Forces. u Dorothy Ingram
Shaner, 75, of Pittsboro; July 11, 2010. Shaner

retired from the political science faculty at the
University of Tennessee. As an academic at the
University of South Carolina, he founded the state
student legislature, which became a model for student
legislatures in other states. In WWII, he served in the
Navy in Panama, in charge of the fleet post office. He
taught a year at the Naval War College and became
an adviser to the Pentagon, State Department and
White House on national security. At UNC, he belonged
to the Philanthropic Society. u Caroline Hendricks
Crabtree (’ 43 MA), 89, of Cape Coral, Fla.; Feb. 9,
2010. u Henry Calvin Doby Jr. (’ 43), 89, of Albemarle;
July 17, 2010. Doby practiced law for more than 50
years, retiring in 2010, and was Albemarle city attorney
for 47 years. In WWII, he served in the Army Air
Forces as a radio operator, receiving many awards,
including the Distinguished Unit Badge with two
Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. In Albemarle, he served on
the hospital board of trustees and as county chairman of the Democratic Party. u Dr. William Andrew
Dunnagan (’ 43 AB, ’ 49 CMED), 88, of Spring, Texas;
Aug. 23, 2009. Dunnagan retired as a radiologist,
working in nuclear medicine. He served in the Army

Stallings Jr., 83, of Raleigh; Aug. 9, 2010. Stallings
was associate professor of surgery at the UNC medical school and a general surgeon in private practice
in Raleigh. He co-founded Wake Surgical
Consultants and was president of the medical staff
of Wake Medical Center and chief of surgery at both
Wake Medical Center and Rex Hospital. In WWII, he
served in the Army in Italy. He retired to Oriental. u

was a professor of media and popular culture at
UNC and several other universities. He produced
documentaries and, as a social activist, spoke at
