Laurie Norman ’ 83 was a sophomore when she went to the first meeting for
the Order of the Bell Tower. She had
moved to an off-campus apartment and felt
a need to stay closer to the University.
Joining OBT — now Carolina’s official
student ambassador
program —shaped
Norman’s UNC experience and her life. As
the second elected
president of OBT,
Norman worked in
alumni relations at the
GAA after she graduated. She is now director of alumni relations
for UNC’s School of
Education.
OBT gave Norman,
a Wilkesboro native, an
opportunity to meet
chancellors and alumni from every part of
Carolina — including the famous, such as
broadcaster Charles Kuralt ’ 55, whom she
met at a Commencement.
“Being from a small town, being a first-generation college graduate, that was never
an opportunity I envisioned,” she said.
Harriet Morrison Loweth ’ 82, the first
elected president of the organization,
remembers being in OBT before the
organization even had a name.
Like Norman, Loweth attended the first
meeting, organized by Bo Dunlap ’ 64, an
assistant director of
alumni affairs, and
Bob Saunders ’ 81, the
student body presi-
dent. They pitched
the group as a student
alumni association.
“It was a concept
that was fairly new,”
Loweth said. It became
the GAA’s only student group and was a
bridge between the
student body and
alumni.
Loweth and
The people who have served in OBT
develop an “infectious passion” for the
University, said Loweth, a member of the
Order of the Bell Tower Marks 30th Year
First leaders recall opportunities, deeper bond with Carolina
Interacting with alumni
and others helped
Harriet Loweth ’ 82 bond with the
University.
‘It was different than the way I
was connected
to the University
through my sorority
or connected through
my academic program.’
OBT Today
The Order of the Bell Tower is organized into
three committees — alumni relations, current student relations and future student relations.
Alumni relations committee
Serves in the Chancellor’s Box in Kenan Stadium
and hosts reunion events to help keep alumni connected
to the University.
Current student relations committee
Focuses on connecting students with alumni and the community through service
projects, Homecoming activities and exam survival guides.
Future student relations committee
Educates middle school and high school students about the opportunities of higher
education. This includes bringing students to tour campus through the Tar Heel
Outreach Program.
