University records and even the books
of Chapel Hill clothing stores.
The investigation lasted a year. When
the decision came down in January
1961, it included “excessive entertainment” and improper paying of lodging
and some food for players’ families.
The letter also said, “It has proved
impossible to verify with any degree
of accuracy the expenditure of large
sums of money on behalf of the bas-
ketball program at the University of
North Carolina over an extended
period of time.”
In practical terms, the year’s proba-
tion cost UNC nothing more than a
ban from the NCAA tournament and
any other invitational tournaments asso-
ciated with the NCAA. Aycock took
the team out of the 1961 ACC Tourna-
ment to prevent it from beating a team
that had a chance to go to the NCAA.
Aycock repeatedly had told the
NCAA that the school had nothing to
hide, and his forthrightness was considered important in the relative lightness
of the penalty.
McGuire left after the difficult 1960-
61 season to coach professional ball. His
successor, Dean Smith, wrote a letter to
Harry Gotkin saying he hated to lose
him but, in light of the situation, it was
best he not work for the program.

Baddour, Thorp and Davis were
grim as they walked into the Aug.
26 news conference to announce
that, in the course of interviews
about players’ dealings with
agents and other outsiders, possible academic cheating had come
to light. Thorp, who has heard
plenty from football fans who
want the probe wrapped up quickly, has insisted the University’s
part of it must be thorough and
the NCAA’s part must move at the
NCAA’s pace.
