Yorktown, Va.; June 20, 2010. Bowles retired from
the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel after 22 years of
service, including in the Vietnam War. Following military retirement, he worked in avionics for aerospace
companies. At UNC, he belonged to Kappa Alpha

(’ 52), 80, of Radford, Va.; March 7, 2010. Bowman
was a dance instructor in Mount Airy for many years.
u Edward Bland Brown Jr. (’ 52 BSBA, ’ 59 MBA), 80,
of Fuquay-Varina; June 27, 2010. Brown retired as a
securities analyst with Carolina Securities. In the
Korean War, he was in the Air Force. At UNC, he was
on the football team and belonged to Zeta Psi. u
Elizabeth Bush Buck (’ 52 AB), 80, of Salisbury; May
21, 2010. Buck was a chemist for DuPont. She was
a member of Alpha Gamma Delta at UNC. u J. Gene
Butler (’ 58 BSPHR), 74, of Shelby; May 28, 2010. A
pharmacist, Butler retired as owner of Medical Arts
Pharmacy. At UNC, he was on the baseball team. u
Phillip Augustus “Gus” Cain (’ 50 AB), 83, of
Gastonia; May 1, 2010. Cain retired as vice president
of industrial engineering for the Wix Corp. He was a
church elder for many years and, in WWII, served in
the Navy. At UNC, he belonged to Kappa Alpha Order.
u Samuel James Calvert Jr. (’ 51 BSBA), 81, of
Greeneville, Tenn.; May 16, 2010. Calvert retired as
chairman of the board of directors of a privately
owned tobacco company. He was former president of
the Tobacco Association of the United States. He
served his church in a variety of roles. He belonged

Chandler Jr. (’ 55), 78, of Salado, Texas; June 18,
2010. Chandler was a physician, specializing in gastroenterology internal medicine. In the Korean War,
he was an Army operating room specialist. u James
Erskin Coleman Jr. (’ 51), 84, of Raleigh; June 6,
2010. After a long career with Westinghouse,
Coleman worked in auto sales. He received the Silver
Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts for distinguished
service and was recognized for more than 50 years
as a Master Mason. He was in the Navy in WWII and,
later, in the Army National Guard and Army National
Guard Reserve. u Maurice L. Feldman (’ 50), 95, of
Chapel Hill; June 29, 2009. Feldman retired from
UNC. u Clarence M. “Don” Ferguson Jr. (’ 50
BSPHR), 81, of Siler City; June 26, 2010. Ferguson
retired as a pharmacist and co-owner of a pharmacy.
At UNC, he belonged to Sigma Chi. u Annie Parker
Garner (’ 50 CPHN), 94, of Mount Olive; June 17,
2010. Garner retired as a public health nurse in the
Duplin County Health Department. She served in the
Army Nurse Corps, achieving the rank of captain. u
Cal Gibson (’ 56 AB), 78, of Charlotte; May 18, 2010.
Gibson was a real estate investor. He served in the
Navy. u Joseph Leving Godwin (’ 50 BSCOM), 91, of
Portsmouth, Va.; May 20, 2010. Godwin owned his
own CPA firm. He served in the Army in WWII and
belonged to Alpha Kappa Psi at UNC. u David
Whitmore Goodrich (’ 59), 73, of Winston-Salem;
June 8, 2010. Goodrich had a long career in textiles
sales and marketing, retiring from a sales company
he founded. He served in the Navy. u Clarence
Edward Greenway (’ 53 BSBA, ’ 56 MBA), 78, of
Morganton; May 24, 2010. Greenway retired as vice
president of graphic design for Drexel-Heritage
Furnishings and received a number of awards for his
work. He was president of Morganton Kiwanis Club,
from which he received many awards. He served in
the Army. At UNC, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa
and was on the men’s soccer team. u Dr. Samuel
Thompson Haddock (’ 54 AB), 80, of Anderson, S.C.;
June 19, 2010. Haddock retired after 50 years as a
pediatrician. At UNC, he was on the men’s soccer
team and belonged to Chi Phi. u John Gamage
Haesloop (’ 54 MA, ’ 60 PhD), 80, of Misenheimer;
June 26, 2010. Haesloop was professor of biology at
Pfeiffer University, where he also had positions as
academic dean and chairman of faculty council. In
retirement, he designed and maintained the campus
rose garden as a volunteer. He served in the Army. u
James Aloysius Haggerty (’ 56), 77, of Smithfield,
Va.; May 19, 2010. Haggerty served more than 30
years in the Air Force, flying jet fighters. He had three
tours of duty in the Vietnam War. Following his retirement, he worked with the American Red Cross in disaster services. u William Michael Hamilton (’ 54,
’ 59 AB), 78, of Washington, D.C.; April 25, 2010.
Hamilton retired as a director of training with Geico.
Previously, he worked for an appraisal company. He
served in the Army. u Cyrus R. “Bob” Harrington Jr.
(’ 57 AB), 75, of Arlington, Va.; May 17, 2010. A
retired Air Force major, Harrington completed a 12-
volume reference work on the history and regulations
of military medals and decorations shortly before his
death. He had executive positions with systems-man-agement firms and founded his own consulting business. A navigator who served in the Vietnam War, he
received honors including the Bronze Star and
Meritorious Service Medal. At UNC, he was in
AFROTC and Order of the Old Well, on the debate
team and president of Lambda Chi Alpha. u
