community service bears his name. He was the
fourth Dr. David Tayloe in his family to practice medicine in Washington. He served in the Navy in WWII.
He received the UNC medical school’s Distinguished
Service Award and served on UNC’s Board of
Trustees. At UNC, he belonged to Phi Gamma Delta.
u Neil Howard Thompson (’ 43 AB), 90, of Cary; May
8, 2010. Thompson retired as associate minister at a
Methodist church in Raleigh. Before training as a
minister, he, along with his wife, owned a chain of
hair salons. In WWII, he was in the Army and, at UNC,
belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha. u Dr. Bate
Carpenter Toms Jr. (’ 40, ’ 47 BSMED; ’ 48 CMED), 91,
of Martinsville, Va.; June 4, 2010. Toms retired as a
general practice surgeon. He served in the Navy in
WWII. At UNC, he belonged to Delta Kappa Epsilon.
u Leo Henry Volker Jr. (’ 48), 83, of Pembroke Pines,
Fla.; March 23, 2010. Volker was a data processing
supervisor. At UNC, he belonged to Sigma Nu. u
Mary Caudill “Peggy” Weiss (’ 44 AB), 87, of Austin,
Texas; May 2, 2010. Weiss retired as a paraprofessional in the forensic laboratory at Alexandria
Archaeology and volunteered with the New Mexico
state archeology laboratory. She belonged to Chi

Williams (’ 47 AB), 84, of Atlanta; May 11, 2010.
Williams was an insurance and real estate agent for
a time and was involved in a number of responsibilities in her church. At UNC, she belonged to Chi
Omega and Valkyries and was a cheerleader.
’50s Douglas Warren Ayres (’ 53 AB) of Sedona, Ariz., has received an hon- orary doctor of laws degree from
Roanoke College of Salem, Va. Ayres was cited for his
role in aiding governments in the U.S. and beyond to
improve operations while a consultant with the
National Governmental Center subsidiary, PAS, at the
University of Chicago. u James Tully Beatty (’ 57 AB)
of Charlotte was the guest speaker at the spring
meeting of the East Charlotte Rotary. Beatty ran the
first indoor sub-four-minute mile, an event that has
been named one of the top five most exciting
moments in N.C. sports history. u Dr. E. Flynn Harris
(’ 56 AB, ’ 60 DDS) of Charlotte has received the Distinguished Service Award from the UNC Dental
Alumni Association. Harris is in private practice. u
Paul Joseph Rizzo (’ 50 BSCOM) of Chapel Hill has
received an honorary doctor of laws degree from
UNC. Rizzo is chair emeritus of Franklin Street Partners and former dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business
School (1987-92) and served on the GAA Board of
Directors (1992-95). u Eugene Leslie Roberts Jr.
(’ 54 ABJO) of New York has received an honorary
doctor of laws degree from UNC. Roberts is a former
national editor of The New York Times, former executive editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, professor of
journalism at the University of Maryland and co-author of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The
Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and
the Awakening of a Nation. u Fred Colson Robinson
(’ 54 MA, ’ 61 PhD) of New Haven, Conn., has received
an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from
UNC. Robinson is the Douglas Tracy Smith Professor
of English Emeritus at Yale University and a specialist in Old English language and literature. u James
Edgar Shockley Jr. (’ 57 AB, ’ 59 MA, ’ 62 PhD) of
Blacksburg, Va., has been named professor emeritus
by Virginia Tech. Shockley, associate professor of

T. Harold Adams (’ 50 BSCOM), 85, of Hickory; May
3, 2010. Adams was a chartered life underwriter and
a 50-year member of the Catawba Valley Association
of Insurance and Financial Advisors. He served in the
Navy in WWII. u John Wrey Aderholdt Jr. (’ 53), 79,
of Columbia, S.C.; June 12, 2010. Aderholdt retired
as executive director of a regional transportation
authority. In the Korean War, he served in the Air
Force as a senior air traffic controller and then as an
instructor and instructor supervisor. He later continued his air traffic teaching with Civil Air Patrol cadets.
Active in the Lions Club, he was district governor. u
LeRoy Banks Attaway Jr. (’ 59), 72, of Shawnee
Mission, Kan.; May 9, 2010. Attaway was producer,
writer and director for The American Sportsman on
ABC television. In addition, he was editor of boating
magazines. His memoir, A Home in the Tall Marsh
Grass, recalled his childhood in the South Carolina
Low Country. As a photographer, he had his work
shown in galleries in New York. After he moved to
Kansas, he continued as a freelance writer and
maintained a website of travel and photography. At
UNC, he belonged to Chi Psi. u Robert Edward L.
“Ted” Barnes (’ 50 AB), 82, of Winston-Salem; June
16, 2010. Barnes was an officer in the banking
industry and was an insurance broker. At UNC, he
was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. u Ann
Trabue Bass (’ 52 AB, ’ 54 MA, ’ 62 PhD), 79, of
Hopkinsville, Ky.; May 28, 2010. Bass retired as a
