’30s ; obituaries Vance Washington Kinlaw (’ 30),
100, of Greensboro; May 21, 2010. Although Kinlaw
retired as a commercial real estate broker, most of
his career was as a construction engineer. In Greensboro, he supervised construction of several city landmarks, including both Page and Smith high schools
and Friendly Shopping Center. He learned large-scale
construction by working on the Hoover Dam and the
first railroad bridge across San Francisco Bay. In
WWII, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers. u
Frank Alexander Longest Sr. (’ 37 BSCOM), 94, of
Mount Airy; April 29, 2010. When Longest retired as
financial officer, treasurer and partner in a furniture
company, he moved on to a second career as warehouse manager for a tire company. In 2004, he
received the N.C. Experience Works Award, as one of
the oldest people in the nation maintaining a regular
40-hour workweek. In WWII, he served in the Army
Air Corps, working to transport supplies to troops and
return wounded solders to the mainland. He earned
the Bronze Star.
’40s Orville Dillard Coward Sr. (’ 49, ’ 48 AB) of Sylva has been inducted into the N.C. Bar Association’s General
Practice Hall of Fame. Coward practices in the law
office he started in 1951, now called Coward, Hicks
and Siler. u Mary Jo Cain McLean (’ 47 AB, ’ 49 MA)
of Pensacola, Fla., has opened a gallery space and
more than 40 years and was mayor of Halifax for 36
years. In WWII, he was in the Army. u Ben Franklin
Curry (’ 42 MA, ’ 56 PhD), 92, of Kissimmee, Fla.; May
25, 2010. Curry was a professor of economics at
Georgia State University for many years. In WWII, he
was in the Navy. u Mary Neely DeMauro (’ 49 AB),
82, of Fern Park, Fla.; May 2, 2010. DeMauro lived in
Fort Lauderdale until 2005. There she taught art in
the Broward County schools and was a docent at the
Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art. u Ruth Sayce
Ferguson (’ 45 AB), 86, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; May 26,
2010. u Arthur Wallace Griffith (’ 48), 88, of Media,
Pa.; May 25, 2010. Griffith was a purchasing agent
for the DuPont Co. In WWII, he served in the Marine
Corps. At UNC, he belonged to Delta Sigma Pi and
was a manager for the football team. u James
Eugene Hall (’ 48 BSCOM), 86, of Pawleys Island,
S.C.; June 19, 2010. Hall founded an electronics
company in Greensboro. In WWII, he was a Navy
flight instructor. At UNC, he belonged to Beta Gamma
Sigma. u William Renny Harding Jr. (’ 49 BSCH), 83,
of State College, Pa.; June 3, 2010. Harding was an
engineer with 14 patents. He co-founded a prototype-
development and consulting firm. An amateur magi-
cian, he was inducted into The Magic Circle of The
Centre for the Magic Arts in London for his contribu-
tions to performance magic. In the Navy, he was an
electronics technician. At UNC, he belonged to the
Dialectic Society and was on the staff of The Daily
Tar Heel. u Donald Bales Hayman (’ 47 MA, ’ 63
PhD), 91, of Chapel Hill; May 22, 2010. Hayman was
professor emeritus of UNC’s School of Government,
formerly the Institute of Government. He was assis-
tant director of the institute, instrumental in initiating
the master of public administration program, for
which he taught, and director of the state govern-

Clarence Samuel Albea Jr. (’ 47 BSCOM), 89, of
Raleigh; May 28, 2010. Albea, a CPA, retired as
secretary-treasurer of A.E. Finley & Associates in
Raleigh. In WWII, he served in the Army. u Walter
Davis Arnold (’ 49, ’ 51 AB), 87, of Bristol, Tenn.; May
29, 2010. Arnold owned a nursery and a farm. In
recognition of his commitment to protecting the envi-
ronment, he was honored with an award for a lifetime
of service to the beautification of Bristol. In WWII, he
served in the Naval Air Corps. He was a member of
Sigma Chi at UNC. u Robert Wilton Baugham Jr.
(’ 49 AB), 81, of Naples, Fla.; May 25, 2010. Baugham
owned and operated a hotel and restaurant in
Naples, then worked with an interior-decorating busi-
ness. He served with the Air Force Special Services
in the Korean War. u Sion Alford Boney (’ 44, ’ 47
BSCOM), 87, of Greensboro; May 14, 2010. Boney
retired as secretary and vice president of a commer-
cial management firm. He was vice president and
trustee of the philanthropic Hillsdale Fund for many
years. Among his many civic activities, he was a
founding board member of the Community Foundation
of Greater Greensboro, chairman of Hollins University
board of trustees and a trustee of Old Salem Inc. As
an alumnus, he served on the Guilford County
Morehead (now Morehead-Cain) Scholarship
Committee and on the Board of Visitors. In WWII, he
was in the Navy, then served in the Navy Reserve.
While at UNC, he belonged to Delta Kappa Epsilon.
u Charles Manuel Borton (’ 47), 84, of Richmond,
Va.; June 19, 2010. Borton founded a barrel and box
company. The National Barrel and Drum Association
honored him as Man of the Year in 1997. In WWII, he
served in an aviation unit of the Navy. He belonged
to Pi Lambda Phi at UNC. u Joseph Marion Brantley
Jr. (’ 40), 92, of Greensboro; May 13, 2010. Brantley
retired as chairman and CEO of a service and parts
company. In WWII, he was in the Army Air Forces and
part of the occupation troops in Germany. At UNC, he
was on the football team and belonged to Beta Theta
Pi. u G. Isham Britt (’ 40 AB), 91, of Denver, N.C.;
June 4, 2010. Britt retired as a pharmaceutical repre-
sentative. In WWII, he was in the Marine Corps. At
UNC, he belonged to the Philanthropic Society. u Dr.
William R. Covington Jr. (’ 44), 87, of Halifax, Va.;
May 11, 2010. Covington was a dentist in Halifax for
