When she retired,

columnist for 43 years. During her career, she
received a number of awards, including N.C.
Woman of Achievement from the National
Federation of Press Women and Headliner of
the Year by Women in Communications. During
WWII, she was a linotype operator for a
Waynesboro, Va., newspaper. At UNC, she gradu-
ated Phi Beta Kappa. She donated her papers to
the North Carolina Collection at Wilson Library.

of Durham; March 2, 2010. Harris was owner of the
Broadway Yellow Cab Co. in Durham for 21 years. u
Clarence Fillmore Hayes Jr. (’ 50 AB, ’ 56 MEd), 81,
of Burlington; March 4, 2010. Hayes retired as a
guidance counselor at Southeast Guilford High
School. He had been a high school band director and
played clarinet, saxophone and keyboard with The
Reflections and other groups. He served in the Army.
He was in Marching Band at UNC. u S. Thomas
Holland Jr. (’ 50 AB), 85, of Edenton; April 15, 2010.
Holland was a sales representative and consultant in
the textile industry. He was president of the Edenton
Lions Club and an Eagle Scout. In WWII, he was in
the Army Air Corps. u E. Mayo Holmes Jr. (’ 51
BSBA), 82, of Fork, S.C.; March 4, 2010. Holmes
retired as a Medicaid auditor for the state of North
Carolina. u Bjorn Frederick Hrutfiord (’ 59 PhD), 78,
of Blaine, Wash.; Feb. 16, 2010. Hrutfiord was professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of
Washington. His teaching and research specialty was
pulp and paper chemistry. For two years, he taught
at Nanjing Forestry University in China. u Jimise
Skillman Hunt (’ 59 AB), 72, of Durham; March 4,
2010. Hunt retired as chief of volunteers at the VA
Hospital. Previously, she was a teacher’s aide. u
Mary Ruth Silliphant Jett (’ 56 AB), 75, of Norfolk,
Va.; April 16, 2010. Jett was a teacher in the Norfolk
city schools and had been president of a group supporting the children’s hospital. u William Roderick
Johnson (’ 55), 77, of Asheville; March 25, 2010.
Johnson retired as personnel department chief of
Western Electric. He served with the Army in the
Korean War. u Julian C. Jordan III (’ 50), 85, of
Carpinteria, Calif.; April 19, 2010. Jordan retired as
vice president and manager of the Carpinteria office
of Barclays Bank. He was president of the Lions Club
and the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce.
He served in the Army in WWII in armored artillery. u
Gladys Elizabeth Joyce (’ 58 BSPHR), 88, of
Kernersville; April 25, 2010. Joyce was a pharmacist
at drugstores in Kernersville. At UNC, she belonged
to Kappa Epsilon. u Doris Brown Holt Kingsmore
(’ 54 ABEd), 79, of Raleigh; March 18, 2010. An educator, Kingsmore taught at the Governor Morehead
School for the Blind for 34 years. u Dr. Robert Felix
Kluttz (’ 56 DDS), 83, of Kannapolis; April 20, 2010.
Kluttz, a dentist, retired in 2007 after 51 years of
practice in Landis. He served in the Army in WWII. u
Donald Gene Malpass (’ 59), 76, of Lugoff, S.C.; Jan.
6, 2010. Malpass retired as an insurance agent. In
the Korean War, he served in the Air Force. u Harvey
Blount Mann Jr. (’ 56 MBA), 79, of Virginia Beach,
Va.; March 30, 2010. Mann retired as a vice president of Bank of America. He was president of the
Virginia Beach Rotary Club and a Harris Fellow. u Dr.
Roland Leroy Mayberry (’ 59 BSDEN, ’ 62 DDS), 73,
of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; April 7, 2010. Mayberry was a
retired dentist and retired Air Force Reserve lieutenant colonel. u Freda Siler McCombs (’ 59 MEd,
’ 63 EdD), 77, of Glen Allen, Va.; April 22, 2010.
McCombs retired as dean of the School of Arts and
Sciences at Longwood College. In retirement, she
was associate vice president for academic affairs for
two years. During her years at Longwood, she taught
science classes for students preparing for teaching
elementary education. u Melinda Wabberson
McCoy (’ 57), 74, of Indianapolis; April 11, 2010.
McCoy’s interests were in the arts, gardening and
conservation. In Knoxville, Tenn., she was active in
the Knoxville Museum of Art and donated a collection of paintings to it. She was a member of the
Garden Club of America, holding a number of positions and becoming a GCA horticulture judge. She
received many awards from the garden club, including its conservation achievement certificate. u John
G. McCullen Jr. (’ 59 MBA), 79, of Chapel Hill; March
12, 2010. McCullen’s business career was as an
investment counselor, broker and bank trust officer.
A graduate of the Naval Academy, he was on the
Mine Force at the close of the Korean War. u
Daniel Wilkins McMurry (’ 58 AB, ’ 62 MA), 77, of
Murfreesboro; March 27, 2010. McMurry taught
sociology at the University of Southern Mississippi,
UNC-Greensboro and Middle Tennessee State
University. He spent 10 years in Mexico, establishing
a lunch program at an elementary school and working with a program that sponsored underprivileged
students to complete high school. He served in the
Navy. u Dr. Andrew John Miketa (’ 52 AB, ’ 60 DDS),
80, of Chapel Hill; April 4, 2010. Miketa retired from
the private practice of dentistry in Chapel Hill. He
was on the UNC football team for four years and was
starting center for the Detroit Lions for two years. He
served in the Air Force. At UNC, he was a member of
Phi Kappa Sigma. u Carl Stephen Milsted (’ 56, ’ 57
BSBA; ’ 59 LLBJD), 75, of Swansboro; April 23, 2010.
A lawyer, Milsted was co-founder of the Jacksonville
law firm Warlick, Milsted and Dotson. He was mayor
of Swansboro in the ’60s, town attorney for more
than 20 years and founder of the N.C. Autism
Society. u Anne Tucker Moore (’ 58 MA, ’ 64 PhD),
89, of Coats; March 29, 2010. Moore retired as a
professor of history at Campbell University. She was
active in the Raleigh Oratorio Society and sang in her
church choir. u William Andrew Newcomb (’ 55
BSBA), 76, of Henderson; Feb. 26, 2010. Newcomb
retired as a systems analyst with Roses Stores Inc. u
James Prince Pendergrass (’ 51, ’ 50 AB), 82, of
Raleigh; March 15, 2010. Pendergrass had a lengthy
career with the N.C. Department of Transportation, in
the materials and tests unit. He served in the Navy in
WWII and the Korean War, then in the Navy Reserve.
u Clyde Eulan Pope (’ 57 MEd), 84, of Charlotte;
March 16, 2010. Pope retired as director of pupil
accounting and pupil assignment for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. He was a leader in implementing the desegregation plan for the school system.
While serving on a battleship in WWII, he witnessed
the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. u William P.
Powell Sr. (’ 54 BSPHR), 77, of Raleigh; April 9, 2010.
A pharmacist, Powell was a partner at the
Community Medical Center in Mars Hill, also opening
drugstores in Black Mountain and Swannanoa. In the
’90s, he worked in state government. When he
retired, he worked part time as a pharmacist in
Raleigh. He was mayor of Mars Hill for 20 years and
served a term as a state senator. He was a pharmacist in the Army in the mid-’50s. At UNC, he belonged
to Glee Club, was president of his pharmacy graduating class and received the Rho Chi Award for highest
scholastic average. u Norman G. Ridenhour (’ 50
BSCOM), 86, of Greensboro; March 3, 2010.
Ridenhour retired as president and CEO of Carolina
Steel Corp. In addition to singing in his church choir,
he was a member of the Southern gospel group The
Oak Ridge Men. In WWII, he was a navigator in the
Army Air Corps. u John Willard Riley III (’ 53, ’ 55
BSBA), 80, of Tucson, Ariz.; March 20, 2010. Riley
had a career of more than 50 years in the real estate
business. He is credited with building Arizona’s first
condominium development. He served in the Air
Force and the Air Force Reserve. At UNC, he
belonged to Theta Chi. u Heman Harwood
Robinson Jr. (’ 51 AB), 83, of Fayetteville; March 3,
2010. Robinson had a long career as a pharmaceutical sales representative. He received the Silver
Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts and was named
elder emeritus of his church. He served in the Navy
as a pharmacist’s mate and was in Times Square on
V-J Day. u D.G. Samuel Jr. (’ 54 BSBA), 78, of
Southern Pines; April 4, 2010. Samuel retired from
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., then owned an antiques
mall. He was in the Navy Reserve, stationed in a supply depot in Japan. u Jim Redden Saunders (’ 56,
’ 59 BSBA), 76, of Charlotte; April 14, 2010. Saunders
was a partner with Deloitte consulting firm and
became national director of utilities industry consulting. He designed the cost accounting features for
NASA’s space shuttle mission program. He served in
the Army in the Korean War. At UNC, he belonged to
Delta Sigma Pi and Glee Club. u Lee Eastman
Schacht (’ 55 MA, ’ 57 PhD), 79, of Minneapolis;
March 7, 2010. Schacht was head of the human
genetics unit for the Minnesota Department of
Health and often taught at the University of Minnesota
Medical School. He specialized in the study of
Huntington’s disease and served on a number of
national committees related to mental health and
developmental disabilities. u Richard Harvey Sears
Jr. (’ 59 MRP), 78, of Sacramento, Calif.; April 5,
2010. Sears was active in the real estate industry in
California. Previously, he worked in Boston managing
real estate assets for John Hancock. He served in
the Navy. u Dr. Arvid Charles Sieber (’ 56 AB, ’ 60
MD), 76, of Woodbury, Conn.; March 25, 2010.
Sieber retired as a private practice physician in
Ridgefield, Conn. In retirement, he was staff physician at the Southbury Training School. He served in
the Air Force. u Robert Van Sisk (’ 57 BSBA), 74, of
Charlotte; March 13, 2010. Sisk retired as president
and CEO of Piedmont Engineering Corp. His many
community activities included serving as president of
the Charlotte Nature Museum and officer of the
Mecklenburg County Council of Boy Scouts, which
honored him with the Silver Beaver Award. He was
founder and president of the Metrolina Prayer
Network and Charlotte Awake. As a junior golfer, he
twice won both the N.C. Scholastic Golf
