Reunions
Audience members were still wiping
away tears of laughter when freshman
class president Bland Simpson ’ 70 quietly
sat down at the piano and acknowledged
that Black would be a hard act to follow.
Simpson, renowned writer, songwriter
and Red Clay Rambler, performed Catfish
and was soon joined on stage by Randall
Bramblett ’ 70, singer, songwriter and
multi-instrumentalist. Bramblett sang and
played guitar, then picked up a saxophone
and accompanied Simpson, who sang
another original song and played the
piano.
GAA President Doug Dibbert ’ 70
thanked emcee John Haber ’ 70 and the
performers who, he said, “gave new mean-
ing to free speech; none of them were
compensated.” Then he and former head
cheerleader David “Shorty” Henson ’ 70
joined the rest of the audience in reward-
ing the artists with a standing ovation.
Lewis Black ’ 70 has made a career out of his comedic rants, which he unleashed
at his class’s reunion dinner. The evening also featured music by Bland Simpson
’ 70 and Randall Bramblett ’ 70.
GORDON PALMER ’ 82
Maybe it looked as if a
sound-system glitch set off
Lewis Black ’ 70 on a rant,
but it was all part of the
shtick that has made the
successful comedian a hit
on Comedy Central and
venues from the Las Vegas
strip to the Atlantic City
boardwalk. Black was the
headline act at the class of
1970’s reunion dinner Saturday night at
the Alumni Center.
Free Speech,
and We Do
Mean Free
Sally Pullen Logan ’ 60 of Chapel Hill
brushed away a tear as she returned from
her turn on the Kenan turf Sunday. “It was
absolutely wonderful,” she said. “All the
graduates were waving to us.”
Commencement capped a weekend
that included a reunion with her Pi Beta
Phi sorority sisters at her home the day
before. “It was great to see people I’ve
known for 52 years,” she said, a reference
to Carolina’s policy at the time that pre-
vented most women from enrolling before
their junior year. Otherwise they might
have known each other for 54 years.
New Graduates and Longtime Friends
Because he was celebrating only his
40th reunion this time, Bob Ward ’ 70 of
Chapel Hill will have to wait 10 years to
march at another Commencement. If he
shows the same determination he had the
first time around, chances are he’ll make it.
In 1970, because of the unrest over the
shooting of students protesting the
Vietnam War at Kent State in Ohio, pro-
fessors at Carolina were given the option
of canceling final exams. Many students
left, but Ward, a business major whose pro-
fessors held exams as scheduled, stayed on
through graduation, held in Kenan
Stadium on a Monday evening.
But he had a potential scheduling conflict: His softball team had a game that
night. So Ward wore his team uniform
under his graduation gown. After the ceremony, he dashed to the Student Union to
turn in his gown, scooped up his diploma
and made it to the game on time.
