correctional institutions and worked as a youth counselor. He served with the Army in WWII as a
Japanese language interpreter and was a trombonist
with a traveling jazz band. At UNC, he belonged to
Alpha Chi Sigma and Pi Kappa Alpha. u Florrie
Trimble Hill (’ 47 AB), 83, of Gainesville, Ga.; Nov. 25,
2009. Shortly after graduation, Hill was a schoolteacher. At UNC, she was an officer of Alpha Delta Pi.
u L. Edward Hodges Jr. (’ 48 AB), 90, of Durham;
Dec. 2, 2009. Hodges’ career with The Herald Sun —
as an editor, reporter and columnist — spanned 50
years. He traveled with Presidents Nixon, Ford,
Carter, Reagan and George H. W. Bush and in 1998
won first place from the N.C. Press Club for his
columns. In WWII, he was a cargo pilot for the Army
Air Corps, flying supplies and troops across the
Himalayas. u Ralph Hinton Hodges Jr. (’ 41), 88, of
Kill Devil Hills; Dec. 18, 2009. Hodges was former
president of Seaboard Savings and Loan, which
became Cooperative Bank. He chaired the N.C.
Savings & Loan League. In WWII, he was in the Army
Air Forces. At UNC, he was a member of Phi Gamma
Delta. u Ernest Walter Hooper (’ 49 MA, ’ 57 PhD),
88, of Huntsville, Ala.; Jan. 30, 2009. Hooper retired
as a history professor at Middle Tennessee State
University. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity
and Meals on Wheels. He served in the Navy in
WWII. u Albert William Johnson (’ 42), 89, of
Nashville, Tenn.; Dec. 16, 2009. Johnson was
founder of a real estate company that also was a
national commercial mortgage banking firm. He
served 14 years with the Army Air Corps, including
service in WWII. Among his positions, he was an original NATO Headquarters staff officer in Paris, serving
under then-Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, and a staff officer with the secretary of Air Force at the Pentagon.
His military honors included the Bronze Star, Silver
Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. u
Lillian Kumli Jones (’ 48 BSPHN), 95, of Salem, Va.;
Nov. 17, 2009. Jones retired from the Veterans
Administration in Washington, D.C. In WWII, she
served in England and France with the Army Nurse
Corps. u Robert Henry Kavanaugh (’ 49 ABJO), 84,
of Clearwater, Fla.; Dec. 4, 2009. Kavanaugh retired
as corporate vice president and secretary of the A.S.
Abell Co., which formerly owned The Baltimore Sun
as well as TV and radio stations and printing facilities. He also was general manager and senior vice
president of The Sun. He wrote, directed and produced the first national TV travel series, Going
Places. In WWII he was in the Navy. At UNC, he was
captain of the lacrosse team and an officer of Chi
Phi. u Harold Hardinge Keith (’ 43 BSCOM), 89, of
Sumter, S.C.; Nov. 2, 2009. Keith owned the former
Sumter Dry Goods Co. and was president of the
Sumter Merchants Association. He belonged to Beta
Theta Pi at UNC. u Robin Smith Kirby Jr. (’ 49
BSCOM), 84, of Charlotte; Nov. 10, 2009. Kirby
worked for Chapel Hill Realty Co. for a number of
years. He served in the Navy in WWII. As an alumnus,
he was on the planning committee for the 25th
reunion of the class of ’ 49. At UNC, he was treasurer
of the student body, three-time president of Kappa
Alpha Order and member of Order of the Grail. u
Hyman Kramer (’ 43), 88, of Whiteville; Feb. 8, 2009.
Kramer retired as owner of Kramer’s Men’s and
Ladies’ Stores, which was in downtown Whiteville for
89 years. Among other activities, he was president of
Whiteville Chamber of Commerce. u James Gray
Lamm (’ 48 ABJO), 84, of Wilson; Nov. 13, 2009.
