Wake County Carolina Club leader Danita Morgan ’ 81 found herself with some pretty big guests as Old Well Celebration host: from
left, Rusty Clark ’ 68, Bill Chamberlain ’ 72, Woody Durham ’ 63, Surry Wood ’08, Lennie Rosenbluth ’ 57 and Eric Montross ’ 94.
Before the laughter subsided, he said,
“They gave me some greens that I’d never
heard of.” Durham said, “Those were col-
lards.” Rosenbluth: “I don’t know what it
was. Then there was what they called
black-eyed peas. I said, ‘I’m not about to
eat a black-eyed pea.’ There was a pea with
an eye staring at me. To this day, I won’t eat
any black-eyed peas.”
Rosenbluth, an NCAA player of the
year who led UNC to the national cham-
pionship in 1957, had a much different
journey to North Carolina. He didn’t really
choose Carolina — it was chosen for him.
It had been assumed that he was going to
N.C. State, but Rosenbluth, never known
as a practice player, didn’t fare well in a
scrimmage at State and Coach Everett Case
withdrew the offer.
A New York native, Rosenbluth wanted
to play for Frank McGuire, but he didn’t
want to stay in New York, where McGuire
coached St. John’s.
“I got a phone call, ‘Don’t do anything
until you hear from Coach McGuire,’ ” said
Rosenbluth, who met McGuire at a restau-
rant. “He said, ‘You’ve got to keep this quiet,
but I’m leaving St. John’s. I need you — I
want to build up a program. I don’t know
where I’m going. It might be the University
of Alabama or it might be the University of
North Carolina.’ I said, ‘Coach, wherever
you’re going, I’m going.’And that’s how I
ended up at the University of North
Carolina.”
Despite the culture shock, he quickly
became proud to be a Tar Heel. McGuire,
using what Rosenbluth described as “flowery
language,” extolled the virtues of wearing
“North Carolina” on his chest. “You put
that uniform on — that’s the motivation.
How could you not play with North
Carolina written on your chest and you’re
going against State or someone else? I can’t
see where they say someone did not moti-
vate them to play when you put that uni-
form on — now practice, that’s something
else.”
His first taste of Chapel Hill came at the
Monogram Club, where he sat down to
eat. “I guess it was all Southern food. I did-
n’t know what was going on,” Rosenbluth
said. “They gave me a hush puppy —
what’s a hush puppy in New York?”
The Wake County club, which started its
Old Well Celebration scholarship program
for deserving Wake County students three
years ago, has raised about $37,000 in
scholarship money, including more than
$12,000 from this event, held at the N.C.
Museum of Natural Sciences. Not only did
attendees pay to attend the event, but they
bid generously on auction items, which
included game tickets and autographed
balls.
“The reason we had such a nice crowd
was that people came out to hear these
gentlemen,” said Danita Morgan ’ 81, the
Wake Club’s leader. “It was wonderful to
hear their stories and have them share their
love of Carolina. Plus, we were able to raise
money for scholarships.” ;
