John Kenyon “Yonni” Chapman (’95 MA, ’06 PhD),
62, of Chapel Hill; Oct. 22, 2009. Chapman was a
lab assistant at UNC Hospitals. He was a civil rights
worker and social justice advocate. As a graduate
student, he attracted attention by questioning Cornelia
Phillips Spencer’s role in UNC’s history and called for
UNC to discontinue naming a distinguished women's
award for Spencer. In 2004, then-Chancellor James
Moeser retired the award, which had been given to
12 women since 1994. u Robert Keith Townley
(’95, ’ 97 AB), 36, of Sao Paulo, Brazil; Oct. 9, 2009.
Townley was a lawyer, specializing in international
law. He practiced primarily in London and Brazil. At
UNC, he was known as Robert Keith Horowitz.
’ 96 Timothy Eugene Pula (’ 96 MRP) of Balti- more has been named senior director of capital planning for the National Aquarium. His responsibilities include overseeing the proposed renovation of the Washington, D.C., venue. u
Michelle Lovette Sharpe (’ 96 ABEd) of Graham has
joined Joanna Warren and Meredith Thornton in purchasing the Centre of Performing Arts. The business
began as the Eloise Glass Studio, where Sharpe and
her co-owners were young dance students. u Jason
B. Silverstein (’ 96 ABJM) of Charlotte has been
named vice president, product-development, in the
digital division of American City Business Journals. u
Kerstin Walker “Kerry” Sutton (’ 96 AB) of Durham
has been re-elected vice president of membership
for the N.C. Advocates for Justice, an organization of
legal professionals dedicated to protecting people’s
rights. Sutton is a lawyer in solo practice with a focus
on felony and misdemeanor criminal defense, traffic,
DWI and personal injury matters. u J. Matthew
Vollmer (’ 96 AB) of Blacksburg, Va., joined Daniel
Hayes Wallace (’08 AB) and Nic Brown in a discussion panel, New to the Scene, at the 2009 N.C. Literary Festival at UNC. Vollmer teaches in the English
department at Virginia Tech.

Aug. 29, 2009. Yadao was a physical therapist and
clinic manager for Commonwealth Orthopaedics. At
UNC, she was a diver on the women’s swim team.
’ 97 Tammy Alice Bouchelle (’ 97 AB, ’01 JD) of Durham has been named director of employer outreach at the UNC School of
Law. u Joanne Kilgour Dowdy (’ 97 PhD) of Kent,
Ohio, in October published a photo autobiography, In
the Public Eye, filled with photos and memorabilia
from her career. She is a professor of adolescent and
adult literacy in the School of Teaching, Learning and
Curriculum Studies at Kent State University. A profile
published in the November/December 2009 issue of

Geigerman (’ 97 MBA, ’ 97 MRP) of Cary has received
a 2009 Mover and Shaker Award from Business

Force. Meggett is associate general counsel for the
