Lessons in Responsibility Help Former Player Catch a New Role

’ 94 Dan Ariely (’ 94 MA, ’ 96 PhD) of Durham, author of Predictably Irrational, participated in the panel Lies and Deceit
at the 2009 N.C. Literary Festival at UNC that also
included John Martin Hicks Hart Jr. (’93 MAC). Ariely
is the James B. Duke Professor of behavioral eco-
nomics at Duke University. u Mia Hamm (’ 94 AB) of
Los Angeles has been appointed international
ambassador for the 2011 women’s World Cup in
Germany. Hamm was a member of the winning
World Cup teams in 1991 and 1999. She also was
chosen as the fourth recipient of the Heisman
Humanitarian Award, presented at the 75th Annual
Heisman Memorial Trophy Dinner in December in
New York. The award recognizes athletes who go
above and beyond to serve their community and
improve the lives of others. In 1997, Hamm’s brother
Garrett died from complications associated with
aplastic anemia, prompting her to start the Mia
Hamm Foundation. The foundation raises awareness
and funds for families needing marrow or core blood
transplants and champions growth opportunities for
young women in sports. Hamm received a $50,000
charitable donation from the Heisman Trophy Trust
on behalf of her foundation, as well as a plaque
commemorating the honor. u Jeffrey Michael
Hodakowski (’ 94 ABEd, ’01 MSA) of Hickory has
received the 2008-09 Partner Principal Award from
the Catawba County Parenting Network.
Hodakowski is principal of Oakwood Elementary
School. u Eric Ashworth Hodges (’ 94 AB) of
Durham has received a $350,000 grant from the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to conduct
research on childhood obesity risks and how
parental feeding patterns influence infant and child
eating patterns later in life. Hodges is an assistant

professor at the UNC School of Nursing. u Timothy
Adams Minor (’ 94 AB) of Greensboro has been
appointed to the board of the N.C. Humanities Council. Minor is the associate vice chancellor of university development at N.C. A&T University and a former
senior member of the development office at UNC. u
Jean Ann Morris (’ 94 PhD) of Reynoldsburg, Ohio,
has received the William Oxley Thompson Award for
Excellence in Teaching from Muskingum University,
where she is an associate professor of French. u
David Barrie Richardson (’ 94 MSPH, ’ 97 PhD) of
Chapel Hill has been appointed by President Barack
Obama to the Advisory Board on Radiation and
Worker Health. Richardson is an associate professor
of epidemiology at the UNC School of Public Health,
where his research investigates occupational and
environmental causes of disease with a particular
focus on ionizing radiation.
