Ronald Gail Boatwright (’ 81 AB) of Colleyville, Texas,
has been inducted into the Belmont Sports Hall of
Fame. During the ceremony, Boatwright recognized
the importance of his coach Earl Lingafeldt, the man
who took Boatwright into his home and sheltered
and encouraged the high school player. Boatwright is
president of Freedman Meats Inc. u Margaret
Louise Milroy (’ 81 AB, ’ 84 JD) of Alexandria, Va., has
been appointed to the American Bar Association’s
Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the
Profession. As a commissioner, Milroy will co-chair
the ABA Spirit of Excellence Award program. Milroy is
assistant general counsel, finance services and compliance, for Verizon. u Daniel Baker Morrison Jr.
(’ 81 MEd) of Charlotte has been named president of
the Carolina Panthers NFL football team. Morrison
comes to the job after serving as director of athletics
at Texas Christian University and, earlier, as director
of athletics for Wofford College, where he oversaw
the fundraising effort that enabled the school to
refurbish its facilities and serve as the Panthers’
training camp. u Mary Dresser Taffet (’ 81 AB) of
Syracuse, N. Y., has been named a grammarian/lin-guist at Janya Inc., the developer of the text analytics platform Semantex.

received a Movers & Shakers Award from Business
Leader Media. Simington, assistant superintendent
for student services for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth

’ 84 Barnett Wayne Berry (’ 84 PhD) of Hills- borough has received the Alumni Achievement Award from the UNC
School of Education. Berry is president and founder
of the Center for Teaching Quality, a research-based
organization that advocates on behalf of teachers in
the debate about the future of the profession. u
ToNola Brown-Bland (’ 84 AB) of Burlington has been
appointed to the N.C. Utilities Commission. From
2005 until her appointment as commissioner,

Governor’s School. Armstrong is a consultant to

new book, The Sweet By and By, at the 2009 N.C.

McKay “Mac” Whatley Jr. (’ 82, ’ 86 MSLS) of
Franklinville has been appointed to the board of the
N.C. Humanities Council. Whatley is a lawyer in private practice in Asheboro. He serves on the Randolph County Landmarks Preservation Commission
and is a trustee of the American Textile History
Museum in Lowell, Mass., where he is the adjunct
curator of machinery and oversees the museum’s
collection of antique textile machinery stored in
North Carolina.

D. Thomas Berry Jr. (’ 82 ABJO), 48, of Greensboro;
Aug. 30, 2009. Berry was a sportswriter with the
High Point Enterprise and won several N.C. Press
Association awards during his career.
’ 83 Kelvin Leroy Bryant (’ 83) of Tarboro was honored at the ACC Night of Legends in Tampa Bay, Fla., in October as part of
the ACC Football Championship Game weekend.
Bryant, who ranks fourth all-time on the UNC rushing
list and holds the UNC record for touchdowns in a
game (six), played for the Washington Redskins.
Bryant works with youth and the elderly and serves
as director of activities for Britthaven of Tarboro. u
