received the Assistant Excellence in Leadership
Award from the International City-County Manage-
ment Association. Miller, a town employee for 20
years, is deputy town manager for Chapel Hill. u Dr.
Paula Renee Newsome (’ 77 AB) of Charlotte was
the Women’s Day speaker at St. Mark’s Episcopal
Church. Newsome, the first female African-American
optometrist to open a practice in North Carolina, is a
national speaker. She served on the GAA Board of
Directors (1998-2002). u Warren Gary Rochelle (’ 77
AB) of Fredericksburg, Va., participated in the panel
The World of Sci-Fi and Fantasy at the 2009 N.C. Lit-
erary Festival on the UNC campus. Rochelle is an
associate professor of English at the University of
Mary Washington. His third novel, The Called, is
forthcoming in 2010. u Whitney Ray Shaw (’ 77 MA)
of Charlotte has been named president and CEO of
American City Business Journals. Shaw succeeds his
father, Ray Shaw, who died last year. ACBJ is the
largest publisher of metropolitan business weeklies
in the U.S. and of sports publications, which include
NASCAR Scene, NASCAR Illustrated and Hemmings
Motor News. u Malbert Smith III (’ 77, ’ 76 MEd, ’ 80
PhD) of Chapel Hill has received an Alumni Achieve-
ment Award from the UNC School of Education.
Smith is the president and CEO of MetaMetrics Inc.,
an independent educational measurement firm that
developed the Lexile Framework for reading and the

Dr. Joan Annette Cummings (’ 77 MD), 60, of
Petersburg, Va.; Sept. 12, 2009. Cummings had an
obstetrics and gynecology practice in Petersburg.
She was active in her church, filling a variety of posi-
tions. u Susan Gail Rose (’ 77 MPH), 58, of Silver
Spring, Md.; Sept. 8, 2009. Rose, a lawyer and public
health expert, created and was co-director of Lariam
Action, an organization that provided information and
support to people experiencing drug reactions from
mefloquine, widely used for the prevention of malaria.

received the President’s Award for the network’s
longstanding commitment to long-form documentaries at the 30th annual News and Documentary
Emmy Awards in September. As managing editor,
Bultman is responsible for all aspects of CNN’s documentary series, including such documentaries as
