Marriage and Family Therapy. u Linda Ellen Oxendine
(’ 67 AB) of Pembroke has been appointed to the
board of the N.C. Humanities Council. Oxendine is a
professor emeritus of UNC-Pembroke, where she
chaired the department of American Indian studies
(1989-2006). Her publications include Fine in the
World: Lumbee Language in Time and Place, which
she co-authored. u Donald Paul Ubell (’ 67 AB) of
Charlotte has been named a fellow of the American
College of Bond Counsel. Ubell is a partner in Parker
Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, where he leads the
firm’s public finance practice.

Ann Dewitt Crowther (’ 67 ABEd; ’ 80, ’ 79 MA), 67, of
Statesboro, Ga.; Oct. 29, 2009. Crowther retired from
the department of writing and linguistics at Georgia
Southern University. She was the first managing edi-
tor of Algonquin Books, working with its founder,
Louis Rubin, professor emeritus of English at UNC.
She had teaching positions at secondary schools and
universities, including UNC. At UNC, she belonged to
Sigma Sigma Sigma. u Carol Sue Miller Harlow (’ 67
BSBA), 63, of Durham; Oct. 8, 2009. u Dr. J. Thomas
Murphy (’ 67 AB, ’ 71 DDS), 63, of Asheboro; Sept.
20, 2009. Murphy was a dental surgeon, specializ-
ing in oral and maxillofacial surgery. While complet-
ing his surgery residency at N.C. Memorial Hospital,
he was chief resident. He belonged to Pi Kappa Phi,
Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Xi Psi Phi. u Peggy
White Toifel (’ 67 MSLS), 65, of Milton, Fla.; Sept. 16,
2009. Toifel worked for the University of West Florida
Library and also taught business classes. She was
chief negotiator for the United Faculty of Florida and
active with the Friends of the Milton Library.
’ 68 Peter Thacher Grauer (’ 68 AB) of New York was honored for his commitment to the education and enrichment of inner-city youth by the Inner-City Scholarship Fund at its
Annual Award Dinner in December. Grauer is chair of
Bloomberg LP. u G. Smedes York (’ 68 MBA) of
Raleigh has been inducted into the N.C. Business
Hall of Fame as a 2009 Laureate. York, a former
mayor of Raleigh, is co-owner and chair of York Properties Inc., McDonald York Building Co. and Prudential York Simpson Underwood and is a principal for
Sam Bass Camera & Video.

John Burney McGowan (’ 68, ’ 70 AB), 68, of
Laurinburg; Sept. 18, 2009. McGowan worked many
years as a painter. He was active in the Hyde County
Historical and Genealogical Society. He served in the
Navy in the Vietnam War. u Dale Sloan (’ 68 BSBA),
63, of Chapel Hill; Oct. 19, 2009. Sloan was a real
estate agent, specializing in first-time home buyers.
She volunteered as an adviser to Kappa Kappa
Gamma. While at UNC, she belonged to Kappa
Kappa Gamma and Valkyries.
’ 69 Joseph Carl Bartel Jr. (’ 69 BSBA) of Winston-Salem has retired as director of budget and management for Forsyth

County after 30 years with the department. Bartel
plans to work for the mission effort started by his
wife, Jane, to help children in Guatemala who are

(’ 69 AB) of Charlotte has agreed to serve on the
newly formed advisory committee for the N.C. Sports
Hall of Fame. Harris is president and CEO of Lincoln
Harris LLC, a full-service commercial real estate
company.

Erika Marx Richey (’ 69 MEd), 94, of Durham; Oct.
16, 2008. An early childhood educator, Richey headed what is now the Duke School for Children and the
Duke Memorial Nursery and helped start seven
Head Start day-care centers. Born in Tibet of
German Moravian missionaries, she continued
throughout her life to support missionary work. u
Carol Holloway Sussman (’ 69 MSPH), 66, of
Gainesville, Fla.; Oct. 6, 2009. Sussman was a laboratory manager and researcher at the University of
Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
Early in her career, she was a researcher in the
School of Public Health. At UNC, she belonged to
Sigma Xi.
