Nags Head; Sept. 6, 2009. Burch practiced law in
Windsor with Pritchett, Cooke & Burch. In Windsor,
he was past president of Rotary Club and the
Jaycees. At UNC, he belonged to Delta Upsilon. u
Elinor Flinn Burgess (’ 61 MEd), 88, of Charleston,
S.C.; Aug. 5, 2009. Burgess retired as a program specialist with the Fairfax County schools and became
executive director of the DECA, an international
organization of management and entrepreneur
teachers, from which she received an honorary life
membership. At retirement, she moved to Pawleys
Island and opened Classic Consignments, which she
operated for 10 years. In WWII, she joined the
American Red Cross and served in England. u Sarah
Bonnycastle “Sally” Hardy (’ 61 ABEd), 70, of
Columbia, S.C.; Oct. 9, 2009. Hardy, a specialist in
early childhood education, was on the faculties of
the University of South Carolina and Allen University.
She was a trainer for Head Start and other federal
programs, did consulting and planning for various
Native American tribal communities and served on
the boards of numerous nonprofits and social organizations. At UNC, she belonged to Kappa Kappa
Gamma. u Keith Eugene Mixter (’ 61 PhD), 87, of
Columbus, Ohio; Oct. 23, 2009. Mixter was professor
emeritus in the School of Music at The Ohio State
University. He taught in the music history division
and was chair of graduate studies. In WWII, he
served in the Army.
’ 62 J. Jey Deifell Jr. (’ 62 BSBA) of Black Mountain has retired after 45 years of pastoral ministry, including in Georgia,
Maryland, Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and
Edinburgh, Scotland. u Wade Hampton Hargrove Jr.
(’ 62 AB, ’ 65 LLB) of Raleigh, a partner with Brooks
Pierce law firm, has been elected to UNC’s Board of
Trustees. Hargrove is a past member of the GAA
Board of Directors (1990-91). In October, he was
honored with the establishment of the Wade H. Hargrove Communications Law and Policy Colloquium.
Funds for the annual media law program at UNC
were raised by the N.C. Association of Broadcasters,
the N.C. Cable Telecommunications Association, the
Hearst Corp. and the UNC School of Journalism and
Mass Communication Foundation.

Association in conjunction with the Citizen Lawyer Task
Force. Baddour, formerly a member of the N.C. House,
practices with Baddour, Parker & Hine PC. He is a
past member of the GAA Board of Directors (1971-
74 and 2004-07). u James Baxter Hunt Jr. (’ 64
LLBJD) of Lucama was honored by N.C. State University with the groundbreaking of the James B.
Hunt Library. The building will be home to the Institute for Emerging Issues, which Hunt founded as

Dobransky “Doe” Ferrell (’ 64 MSW), 86, of Raleigh;
Oct. 4, 2009. Ferrell was a social worker for more
than 60 years. She served in numerous capacities
with service agencies and was recognized as the first
psychiatric social worker in private practice. In 1999,
she received the Social Worker of the Year Award
from the N.C. Society of Clinical Social Workers. u

AB) of Ithaca, N. Y., discussed his biography of
explorer Daniel Boone, Boone: A Biography, at the
2009 N.C. Literary Festival on the UNC campus. Mor-

Hugh A. “Chip” McAllister Jr. (’ 66 MD) of Houston
has donated $7 million to establish the UNC McAllister Heart Institute. The donation will be supplemented by support from his personal foundation and
provisions in his will. McAllister retired from active
practice in 2000 after serving 16 years as founding
chair of the department of cardiovascular pathology
at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal
Hospital in Houston.

Charles Allison Horton (’ 66 PhD), 81, of Zebulon;
Aug. 28, 2009. Horton’s academic career included
chairing the music department at Campbell University
and the choral department at Ferris State
University in Michigan. For 20 years, he was arts
and book editor for The Chapel Hill Newspaper. He
was music director for The Lost Colony and Unto
These Hills. In the late ’70s, he was director of
education for the N.C. Symphony Society. u Philip
Tyree Wade (’ 66 PhD), 78, of Cullowhee; Oct. 6,
2009. Wade was professor emeritus of English at
Western Carolina University, where he was department chair for a number of years. He served in the
Navy.
