a book, A History of Elizabethtown Presbyterian
Church 1834-2009, commemorating the 175th
anniversary of the church.

Jack Aland (’ 47), 86, of Birmingham, Ala.; Aug. 28,
2009. Aland was a partner in a women’s clothing
store that eventually had several shops in the
Birmingham area. Aland later was in commercial real
estate sales. In WWII, he was a Marine and awarded
the Purple Heart. He saw the American flag raised
on Mount Suribachi in Iwo Jima. At UNC, he was on
the football team. u Kathryn Love “Kitty” Aydlett
(’ 41), 90, of Elizabeth City; Sept. 1, 2009. A doll
maker, Aydlett participated in craft fairs and shows.
Her volunteer activities included her church, where
she was a pianist and choir member, and the hospital auxiliary. She was a charter member of Friends of
Dismal Swamp State Park. u Robert Junior Ayers
(’ 49 BSGEO), 84, of Swansboro; Aug. 27, 2009. Ayers
had a long career as a land surveyor in Chapel Hill.
After he retired to Swansboro, he owned Ayers
Elsie Gupton Barrow, 87, of Raleigh; Sept. 22,
2009. Barrow served as a secretary in the UNC
System. u Margery Blackwood Barton, 53, of
Chapel Hill, Oct. 5, 2009. Barton worked at UNC
Hospitals for more than 30 years. She served in
administrative support positions and was named
Support Staff Employee of the Year in 2003 in the
division of urologic surgery. As a volunteer, she
helped prepare meals for residents of the Ronald
McDonald House in Chapel Hill. u Florence Madeline
“Bunny” Bearden, 83, of Richmond, Va.; Aug. 27,
2009. Bearden was chief occupational therapist at
UNC’s medical school in the department of occupa-
tional therapy, where she was also a lecturer. She
served in the Army, earning the rank of colonel. u
Wesley D. Bonds Jr., 66, of Cullowhee; Sept. 14,
2009. Bonds was a biotechnologist at UNC. u Paul
Ivan Boyer III, 54, of Raleigh; Oct. 22, 2009. A para-
medic, Boyer drove the pediatric critical care ambu-
lance for UNC Hospitals. At the time of his death,
he worked for the Womack Army Medical Center
Emergency Medical Services at Fort Bragg. He served
in the Army and in the Army and Navy reserves. He
was an Eagle Scout. u John Kenyon “Yonni”
Chapman (’ 95 MA, ’06 PhD), 62, of Chapel Hill; Oct.
22, 2009. Chapman worked as a laboratory assis-
tant at UNC Hospitals. As a graduate student, he
attracted attention by questioning Cornelia Phillips
Spencer’s role in UNC’s history and called for UNC
to discontinue naming a distinguished women's
award for Spencer. In 2004, then-Chancellor James
Moeser retired the award, which had been given to

Charles Koulias Chiklis, 75, of Cary; Aug. 31, 2009.
A researcher in applied polymer science, Chiklis
taught at UNC. He held 19 patents and had numer-
ous articles published in scientific journals. In addi-
tion, he established the dance band Charlie Chiklis
and the Moonlighters, which performed throughout
North Carolina. He served in the Air Force, working
in research for the Apollo Project. u James Winfred
Crabtree, 85, of Chapel Hill; Oct. 22, 2009. Crabtree
Antiques. He served in the Navy in WWII. u William
Lockett Beerman Jr. (’ 41), 89, of Greensboro; Sept.
9, 2009. Beerman retired as public relations director
of Burlington Industries. Previously, he was a journal-
ist for the Greensboro News & Record. He served in
the Marine Corps in WWII as a pilot, receiving the
Distinguished Flying Cross. At UNC, he was sports
editor of The Daily Tar Heel. u Robert Clifton Blue
(’ 42 BSCOM), 88, of Marion, S.C.; Sept. 22, 2009.
Blue retired as chief financial officer of a construc-
tion company in Goldsboro. In WWII, he served in the
Army Air Forces. At UNC, he belonged to Glee Club. u
Helen Cort Brackett (’ 42), 92, of Claremont, N.H.;
March 25, 2009. Before moving to New Hampshire,
Brackett lived at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill. u
John Larcus Burns (’ 47 AB), 84, of Atlantis, Fla.;
Sept. 18, 2009. A lawyer, he retired from Burns &
Severson PA. He was president of the Palm Beach
County Bar Association. For 30 years, he was on the
board of the Boys and Girls Club of Palm Beach. He
served in the Marine Corps in WWII and the Korean
War, earning a Purple Heart. At UNC, he belonged to
Alpha Tau Omega. u Theresa Feeney Canna (’ 42
CPHN), 90, of Lansing, Ill.; Feb. 20, 2009. Canna
retired as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital
Medical Center. In WWII, she was a nurse in the Navy.
u June Fouraker Clark (’ 48 BSLS), 86, of Raleigh;
retired from the physical education department at
UNC after a 35-year career. u Ann Dewitt Crowther
(’ 67 ABEd; ’ 80, ’ 79 MA), 67, of Statesboro, Ga.; Oct.
29, 2009. Crowther was the first managing editor of

Lloyd Davis, 90, of Chapel Hill; Sept. 12, 2009. Davis
retired as professor of mathematics at UNC. u Lilian
R. Furst, 78, of Chapel Hill; Sept. 11, 2009. Furst
was professor emerita and Marcel Bataillon professor of comparative literature at UNC. She wrote
numerous books and articles that were translated
into several languages. She specialized in the relationship between literature and medicine. Among
her more recent books was Women Healers and
Physicians. She also wrote an autobiography of her
childhood in England, where her family took refuge
after fleeing Vienna in 1939. u Becky Yorks
Holland, 62, of Graham; Oct. 16, 2009. Holland
was an events planner at UNC. u Wayne Hutchins,
81, of Chapel Hill; Sept. 12, 2009. Hutchins retired
from UNC’s electrical distribution department after
41 years. He served his church on the building committee and in other capacities. He was in the Army
military police in the Korean War. u John Forrest
Latta, 73, of Durham; Aug. 20, 2009. Latta retired
from UNC. u Dorothy Young Littleton, 84, of
Raleigh; Sept. 29, 2009. Littleton worked for the
School of Nursing at UNC. u Thomas Daniel
McCarthy, 62, of Pittsboro, Sept. 7, 2009. McCarthy
was chief of police in a number of communities,
including Fayetteville, and served on the adjunct
faculty at UNC. He served in the Coast Guard. u
Rogers McVaugh, 100, of Chapel Hill, Sept. 24,
2009. McVaugh was a research professor of botany
at UNC, specializing in the study of the flora of western Mexico. A nature reserve in that region is named
in his honor. u Dr. J. Thomas Murphy (’ 67 AB, ’ 71
DDS), 63, of Asheboro; Sept. 20, 2009. Murphy was
a former chief resident at N.C. Memorial Hospital.

David Colwell (’ 41), 89, of Wilmington; Sept. 20,
2009. Colwell had a long career with the Bellamy
Drug Co. A tennis player, he won three consecutive
Wilmington City Open Championships and one state
doubles title. In WWII, he was in the Navy. u Henry L.
Cox Jr. (’ 43 BSPHY), 87, of Seminole, Fla.; Oct. 19,
2009. Cox retired as a physicist from Westinghouse
Electric Corp. in Annapolis, Md. He served in the
Navy in WWII. u Edward Myles Craig (’ 48 BSCOM),
86, of Atlanta; Oct. 11, 2009. Craig retired as administrative assistant to the vice president of the South
for Sears, Roebuck and Co. In WWII, he was co-pilot
of a bomber and was shot down and taken prisoner.
At UNC, he belonged to Kappa Sigma. u Laura
Hodges Dailey (’ 43), 87, of Shreveport, La.; Oct. 4,
2009. Dailey received a papal medal from Pope Paul
VI, honoring her work for the church. In addition, she
was a longtime volunteer with a cancer treatment
center. u Edgar S. W. Dameron Jr. (’ 41 AB, ’ 48 LLB),
89, of Burlington; Oct. 5, 2009. Dameron was district attorney of Alamance County for several years
and then was in private practice until he retired. He
served as chair of the Burlington city school board. In
WWII, he was an Army combat engineer. At UNC, he
director of the UNC Institute
of Government (now part of
the School of Government).
As an undergraduate, he was
president of the Dialectic
Society, member of Zeta Beta
Tau and graduated Phi Beta

2009. Plumer was on the faculty of the UNC School
of Social Work. He was editor and chief author of a
national curriculum for childcare workers and published three books related to the placement of children. u Margaret Bryant Pollard, 77, of Moncure;
Sept. 16, 2009. Pollard was a member of UNC
School of Social Work’s department of health
