’30s ; obituaries William Alexander Graham (’ 37),
94, of Charlotte; Sept. 29, 2009. Graham, a bookkeeper and accountant, was president of Graham
Enterprises. u Elmer Douglass “Johnny” Johnson
(’ 36 AB, ’ 42 MA, ’ 51 PhD), 94, of Shelbyville, Ky.; Oct.
15, 2009. Johnson was history professor emeritus at
Radford University. He was the author of several textbooks and had served as an editor of Journal of
Sport History. At UNC, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa,
wrote for Carolina Magazine and belonged to Glee
Club. u Margaret Munch Kendall (’ 38 AB, ’ 42 MA),
91, of Berkeley, Calif.; Aug. 26, 2009. Kendall was a
botanist and artist. While living in Bangkok, she
taught English as a second language. After she
moved to California, she taught literacy and English
as a second language. At UNC, she was selected as
the outstanding art student and was awarded an
individual showing of her works. u Jessie Belle

Charles Tilden Hagan
Jr. (’ 35), 96, of
Greensboro; Oct. 16,
2009. A lawyer, Hagan
founded the law firm
that became Adams
Kleemeier Hagan
Hannah & Fouts. He
was chair of the
Greensboro Coliseum
Commission for more
than 20 years. He
organized a Sea
Scout ship to teach
sailing to Boy Scouts.
In WWII, he was a Marine and received the
Bronze Star with Combat V, among other
awards. As a member of the Reserve Forces
Policy Board, he served in the Vietnam War.
When he retired as a major general, he was the
highest ranking Marine Corps Reserve officer in
the country. As a student, he belonged to Beta
Theta Pi.
Lewis (’ 39 MA), 94, of Enfield; Sept. 22, 2009. A
high school English teacher for 32 years, Lewis also
supervised student teachers from UNC, UNC-Greensboro and East Carolina University. She taught at the
American University in Beirut. She was president of
the N.C. English Teachers Association and served as
editor of its publication. u John Lindsey Matthews
Jr. (’ 39 BSGEO), 92, of Williston; Aug. 27, 2009.
Matthews was a travel agent for AAA. In WWII, he
served in the Army. u Elmer R. Oettinger Jr. (’ 34 AB,
’ 39 LLB, ’ 52 MA, ’ 66 PhD), 95, of Chapel Hill; Oct.
29, 2009. Oettinger retired as assistant director of
the UNC Institute of Government (now part of the
School of Government). As an undergraduate, he
was president of the Dialectic Society and member
of Zeta Beta Tau and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

ABEd), 96, of Davis, Calif.; Nov. 11, 2008. O’Kane
worked in Raleigh for the Agricultural Adjustment
Administration after graduation. She lived in many
places with her husband, a career officer in the
Navy. At UNC, she belonged to Alpha Chi Omega. u
Robert Stanley Reis (’ 38), 91, of Palo Alto, Calif.;
Oct. 22, 2008. Reis was chair and CEO of Allied Van
Lines before founding a records management service. He served with many civic organizations and was
president of the San Francisco Better Business

2009. Morrow
held a leadership
position with the
Carmel Bach
Festival Inc. for
more than 40
years. She also
taught school for
many years. At
UNC, she
belonged to Chi Omega and performed with
Playmakers. In her senior year, her classmates
voted her “Miss Class of 1938.”
Bureau. He gained the rank of Life Master in bridge.
He served as a staff weather officer in the Army Air
Forces in WWII. At UNC, he was on the golf team. u
Irving Paul Schiller (’ 39 MA), 92, of Tarrytown, N. Y.;
Dec. 16, 2008. Schiller lived in California for 30
years and sold medical equipment. He was an Army
infantryman in WWII. u Robert Seymour Jr. (’ 37),
94, of Greenport, N. Y.; Jan. 30, 2009. Seymour
served with the Army Signal Corps. u Maria Tucker
Webb (’ 38 AB), 91, of Sewanee, Tenn.; Jan. 3, 2009.
A nurse for 35 years, Webb worked at Sewanee Mili-
tary Academy and as night supervisor at Emerald-
Hodgson Hospital.
’40s Howard P. Aronson (’ 48 BSCOM) of Middletown, N.J., has been recog- nized by Bank of America as a Local
Hero as part of the bank’s Neighborhood Excellence
Initiative. Aronson will receive a $5,000 donation
from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation for
his designated nonprofit, CPC Behavioral Healthcare.
u John Marsden Ehle (’ 49 AB, ’ 53 MA) of Winston-Salem read and signed books at an event sponsored
by The Writers’ Workshop at the West Asheville Public Library. Ehle read from his novel, Last One Home,
first published in 1984 and re-issued in paperback in
September. u William Clyde Friday (’ 48 LLB) of
Chapel Hill has agreed to serve on the newly formed
advisory committee for the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame.
Friday is president emeritus of the UNC System. u
Thomas Jerome “Jack” McGinn Jr. (’ 49 BSCOM) of
Greensboro joined 101 World War II veterans from
the Triad on a recent trip to the National World War II
