Careers
We all know that networking is the most effective way to get a job. But having
lunch with friends, attending professional
meetings or joining a church — while
appearing to be worthwhile networking
activities — often yield few results. That’s
because they lack an action plan.
Take your networking efforts to a new
level with laser networking, a highly effective strategy to boost your job search. Laser
networking is focused and intentional. It is
for serious job seekers who want to get the
right job in the least amount of time.
Could that be you?
Laser networking is based on knowing
what you have to offer an employer and
targeting the companies that can use your
knowledge, skills and experience. For
example, if you are highly organized, enjoy
the challenges of deadlines and can stretch
a budget, you might want to be an event
planner or a project manager. If you are an
IT wizard, you might create a new inventory system or consult with clients about
the impact of e-marketing.
Decide what your strengths are, and then
identify companies that could use your talents. Make Google your friend; you can
collect a wealth of information about companies online. Search for companies in your
area that are likely targets for the services
you can provide. Your local chamber of
commerce and membership directories of
professional organizations also can provide
a list of companies to consider.
After you have compiled your list of target
companies, you want to find people in those
companies who are willing to talk with
you. The human factor is a critical component to your success. Know what you want
to achieve with every contact and prepare
an agenda for your meeting. You want to
learn about the challenges and opportunities facing the company so that you can
link what you have to offer to its needs.
You also want advice on how to get your
marketing materials to a decision maker,
Because you are a GAA member, you
have two networking tools that can be
unusually helpful in a job search, and both
are based on a particularly powerful aspect
of who you are — your connection to
Carolina:
; The GAA’s Alumni Advisor Network
helps alumni every day reach key people
in targeted companies. The network
consists of almost 5,500 volunteers and is
searchable by company, job title, career
code and location, helping job seekers
identify people in target companies and
contact them. These advisers might not
have a job for you — what they can have
is information, advice and support to assist
you in your job search. (And if you’re
someone who is not yet in the network
and would like to help a Heel, find out
more at alumni.unc.edu/volunteer.)
; Alumni in your target companies can be
found through the GAA’s TarNation/
Online Alumni Directory, with contact
information on more than 270,000 Car-
olina alumni. The alumni in TarNation
are not volunteers, but you can warm up
a cold call by tailoring your search by
class year, dorms and affinity groups, as
well as company, title, career code and
location — helping you to find people
with common interests or backgrounds.
Use your networks, and resist the
impulse to rely on the Web and mega job-
search sites as your main search strategy. In
this competitive job market, it is essential to
humanize your search. Focus like a laser on
people — they are the key ingredient to
your job-search success. ;
